Business Case Intro Text

Mülheim Protestant Hospital (EKM) was founded in 1850 as a small facility with six beds to enable treatment and care of the needy.

Today it has more than 600 beds and 15 specialized departments, from an eye clinic to an outpatient center, making it one of the largest healthcare providers in the western Ruhr area of Germany.

Each year, roughly 1,400 employees care for over 21,000 inpatients and some 62,000 outpatients.

The challenge
Text

The hospital had a previous, unhappy experience with an electronic access system that failed to meet expectations and displayed vulnerabilities, especially in practical use.  This system was disassembled in 2008 and changed to an online security management platform. The hospital started looking for a manufacturer whose offline access control system could be easily integrated with the online system.

The new vendor also had to offer a wide-ranging product line to meet numerous requirements: automatic door systems, glass doors, fire doors, and panic doors, electronic security for patient lockers, staff lockers, and various mobile containers and trolleys.

SALTO Systems was suggested since it already had a proven offline access control system and versatile product portfolio on the market.

Before deciding in favor of SALTO, a series of practical stress tests were carried out in the different wards. The SALTO electronic escutcheons and cylinders won out over competing products due to their high mechanical stability, simple installation and use of standard batteries, which makes battery replacement significantly more cost-efficient.

The access solution technology is based on the SALTO Virtual Network (SVN) with patented read/write functionality and encrypted data transfer. Access rights are stored on the credentials, eliminating wiring of the electronic escutcheons and cylinders.

Information on blocked users and battery levels in escutcheons and cylinders is written on the credentials and passed on. Online wall readers transfer the data to the central server, while at the same time transmitting the updated access rights.

In contrast to traditional keys, the security risk for loss is significantly lower and the costly task of having to replace cylinders if the master key is lost is eliminated.

Business Case Key benefits
  • Employees no longer have to open and close doors manually but can do it easily with their credentials, which is more secure and saves time.
  • The external service providers who regularly restock the numerous electronically secured medicine cabinets and mobile trolleys have their own credentials, thus they can now do their work unannounced and without the presence of a hospital employee.
  • Versatile and robust hardware portfolio for very different types of access points across the entire campus.
