Blog Post Long Text

The Salto Homelok and Salto KS mobile applications have, again, achieved the Mobile Application Security Assessment (MASA) certification. The MASA certification allows Salto to provide secure, compliant Android platform mobile applications for Salto smart access users and system operators. The MASA certification helps system operators and users meet security needs through a standardized, repeatable, and transparent process for assessing the security of mobile applications.

"Security certifications and audits are a proactive defence to ensure that our solutions meet stringent security requirements.  In this particular, Google's MASA certification demonstrates our commitment to robust security practices in our mobile applications and a proactive strategy towards the security of our customers”

Ane Uncetabarrenechea
Chief Information Security Officer Salto Systems

What is MASA?

MASA is an industry-led collaboration to improve application security through third-party security assessments based on industry standards. Via the MASA program, Google recognizes mobile developers who have had their applications independently validated against a set of security best practices for the Android Platform. Salto has passed the review through a certified security laboratory specialised in pen testing called ‘Dekra’. This is done by cybersecurity experts who use the latest penetration testing methodologies to try to find the weakest spot in networks. By identifying weaknesses in an early stage, it is easier to alleviate future complications. The goal of passing these ‘pen-tests’ is to ensure safety in Google Play and the Android ecosystem and provide consumers with more transparency and an overall secure feeling when using the app.

“We are happy and proud that we have achieved the certification. Security is an important topic for us, and the certification is one of the many ways we validate that our security policies and development guidelines are implemented properly for our products”

Hugo Lindén
Information security officer Salto Systems

Enhancing security with improved incident notifications

Blog Post Short Text

Effective incident notification systems play a pivotal role in ensuring swift responses to potential security breaches, system malfunctions, and other critical even

Blog Post Long Text

In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, ensuring 24/7 security of physical spaces has never been more crucial. Effective incident notification systems play a pivotal role in ensuring swift responses to potential security breaches, system malfunctions, and other critical events.

Traditional incident notification systems often lead to information overload and significant delays in response. Operators and systems administrators manage access for facilities – changing access rights, creating new user profiles, and monitoring and securing sites – but at the same time, are bombarded with alerts, from minor issues such as low battery warnings to major security breaches. This not only overwhelms them but also increases the risk of critical alerts being missed. Additionally, the lack of flexibility and analysis in these systems means that security policies, anticipating actions, and preventing situations before they escalate into emergencies via lockdowns and push notifications of potential entry breaches might not effectively alert your response teams.

Whether it is an everyday situation or an emergency, being ready and aware is critical to ensuring you can quickly respond to whatever situations may arise. Having a comprehensive smart access control system and action plan that can be seamlessly activated ensures you respond fast and effectively to everyday incidents and emergency situations.

As the dynamics of building and facility management evolve, there is a need for more sophisticated incident notification systems to manage and optimize workflows to deliver a consistent incident response every time. Modern organizations and smart buildings require systems to advance digitization in their operations to offer rapid customization, delegate responsibilities effectively, and ensure that those responsible receive the information they need to act quickly.

Enhancing security with improved incident notifications

Physical access control that meets modern needs

Smarter and more secure access control optimizes operations. It addresses building needs and a more secure approach to managing security and incident response. Salto KS and Homelok cloud-based smart access solutions, as well as Salto Space the pioneering SVN data-on-card access control platform, have answered these challenges by introducing significant enhancements to their incident notification systems.

Salto KS: A new approach for managing incidents and notifications

Salto KS is a reliable cloud-based access control solution with unified software/hardware architecture that supports a broad spectrum of keyless access methods and integrates advanced security features within a fully remote and wireless cloud-based smart access management platform.

  • Delegated responsibilities: The new system enables both Site Owners and Site Admins to receive and manage notifications based on their interests and role. This delegation helps distribute notifications more evenly and enhances operational efficiency. Previously visible only to Site Owners, notification settings can now be independently managed by Site Admins, although these settings are disabled by default and must be changed.
  • Customization of alerts: Site Admins can now tailor the system to notify them about specific types of incidents, ensuring that each alert is relevant and actionable. Additionally, users can choose to receive notifications for specific locks, allowing for even more precise control over the security monitoring of access points.
  • Flexible notification methods: Site Admins can choose to receive alerts through emails or push notifications through the Salto KS app, selecting the method that best fits their immediate needs.
Enhancing security with improved incident notifications

Salto Space: Physical access and incident management made easy

The Salto Space access control platform offers a comprehensive set of features for managing access and security, including the ability to configure alarm events to trigger specific actions in response to various scenarios.

By leveraging Salto Space’s access control management software alarm events feature, businesses and organizations can elevate incident notification and response mechanisms. The ability to configure specific actions for different scenarios, combined with the platform's user permissions and audit trail capabilities, empowers security staff and operators with the necessary tools to effectively manage access-related incidents.

  • Smart lock connectivity: Detects the loss of connection to a lock, triggering notifications such as email alerts to relevant stakeholders. This proactive approach to monitoring access points ensures swift response to potential security breaches.
  • Sensor signal control: Enables users to integrate sensor inputs with control unit (CU) outputs, allowing for the configuration of specific actions in response to sensor signals. In the demonstration, a physical button simulated a sensor signal, triggering an alarm event to control the action of a relay on the CU, in this case, a beeper. This level of control over sensor inputs and corresponding responses enhances the platform's incident notification capabilities.
  • Door-triggered lockdown: Another highlight of the demonstration was the use of alarm events to enable a lockdown area when a certain door is opened. This feature is crucial for managing security incidents and ensuring rapid response to unauthorized access attempts.
  • Online monitoring: The online monitoring functionality gives users the ability to monitor and control the real-time status of online access points. Additionally, it empowers users to execute actions on doors, such as activating Emergency Open or Emergency Close modes. With online access, the denylist can be automatically transmitted to doors, eliminating the need for manual updates at each individual door.
Enhancing security with improved incident notifications

Homelok: Access control incident notifications for residential and multi-family properties

With Salto Homelok's SVN keyless and cloud-based access control platform for residential and multi-family properties, managing access has never been easier. The platform offers quick online administration, giving property managers and residents seamless control over every entry point in the building.

Salto Homelok's administrator activity screen provides a comprehensive list of events ordered by date and time. Users can easily track activities such as user creations, door unlocks, and access denials. This feature allows property managers to stay informed about all access-related actions within their properties.

  • System Events: System Events are triggered by user actions within the software, typically by individuals with management roles in Homelok. Examples of System Events include user creations, access modifications, and key assignments.
  • Device Events: Device Events are generated by access points and doors within the installation and are primarily initiated by keyholders gaining access. Examples of Device Events include door unlocks by users, access denials, and firmware updates.
  • Unit Activity Monitoring: For property managers, Homelok offers unit-specific activity tracking. In addition to the main activity section, managers can view unit-related events such as unit creations, move-ins, move-outs, and deletions. This allows for a detailed overview of activities specific to individual units within the residential properties managed through Homelok.
  • SVN Events – Offline Event Registration: The Salto Homelok cloud-based platform introduces a revolutionary feature known as offline events within SVN (Salto Virtual Network). This capability allows the system to capture user and access point events, such as a user unlocking a door, and record them in the activity section – even when both the lock and the user's phone or credential are offline.
Enhancing security with improved incident notifications

Impact of security monitoring across industries

Recent enhancements to the Salto KS and Space smart access platforms greatly improve incident notification management across different industries, making it easier to tailor responses to specific building needs:

  • Working Spaces: Operators in coworking spaces can delegate notification responsibilities to system administrators like office managers and technical staff. Office managers can get alerts for unauthorized access attempts, and technical staff can be notified about low battery incidents and system malfunctions, ensuring a secure and seamless working environment.

  • Hospitality: Property owners and managers can delegate notification responsibilities to system administrators, such as hotel front desk staff and maintenance staff. Security managers, for example, can receive immediate notifications for guest check-in, privacy, doors left open, while maintenance staff can be alerted about low battery incidents, ensuring swift action and smooth operations.

  • Residential: Property managers can tailor the notification system and delegate alert responsibilities to system administrators like security personnel and homeowners. A convenient smart access solution for residential properties, connecting access control to security infrastructure to manage any access point allows property managers the capability to receive alerts about unauthorized entry attempts while homeowners are sent notifications about door status changes and low battery issues.

  • Student Accommodations: Student residential buildings such as dormitories or apartments benefit from enhanced customization and delegation features. Site Owners can assign campus security as Site Admins to receive after-hours access alerts. Maintenance staff, also as system administrators, are alerted to system malfunctions or doors left open, facilitating a safe environment.

  • Healthcare: Set up real-time alerts for security staff and maintenance personnel to meet the unique security challenges of healthcare. Security staff, as system administrators, receive notifications for tampering or unauthorized access to sensitive areas, and maintenance staff are notified about low battery levels, ensuring locks function correctly.

  • Education: Manage staff, student, and visitor access to buildings or restricted areas on campus grounds using a role-based system with instant detection of individuals at access points. Receive instant notifications and configure customized responses for multiple crisis levels. Enable area-specific protocols for emergency lockdowns or openings. Incorporating electronic door locks for schools improves school security and crisis management plans.

Improvements to the Salto smart access control platforms’ incident notification system mark a significant advancement in the management of security alerts. By empowering both owners and system administrators with better tools for managing notifications and offering extensive customization options, the system ensures that the right personnel are alerted to the right issues at the right time.

These enhancements help streamline operations and improve response times across various industries, supporting organizations in maintaining better security and efficiency.

Salto smart access solutions transform physical security for data centers

Blog Post Short Text

Comprehensive access control is critical to data centre security.

Blog Post Long Text

In today’s digital age, data is big business. Cloud storage is rising exponentially – in 2023, 60% of corporate data was stored in the cloud. With this increasing adoption of digital data storage, ensuring the security of data centres is paramount. Security threats have become increasingly sophisticated, and the focus on cybersecurity has intensified.

However, eliminating physical risks to data center security remains critical to protecting data. Robust physical security measures help safeguard against unauthorised access, data breaches, and other physical threats that can compromise the integrity of the sensitive data being stored.

Is access control crucial for data center security?

Comprehensive access control is critical to data center security. But data centre operators face several unique challenges, and the right solutions must incorporate tailored features to deliver adequate protection and enduring peace of mind:

1. Security and safety

Granting and revoking user access rights in a timely and accurate manner is crucial for securing data centres. However, this process can be cumbersome and error-prone, leading to potential security gaps after employees leave or change roles.

Additionally, system administrators must manage credentials such as passwords, access cards, biometric data, and cryptographic keys according to international best practices to prevent unauthorised access. Weak or shared passwords, lost keycards, and other credential management issues can compromise security.

2. Accessibility

Relying on a single access mechanism or authentication method creates weak spots in the access control system that act as single points of failure. Effective solutions allow administrators to iImplement multi-factor authentication (MFA) and redundant access management measures to mitigate this risk.

3. Tracking and monitoring

Employees and contractors pose a significant risk to data centre security, as authorised users with legitimate access can misuse their privileges. Monitoring user activities, implementing least-privilege principles, and conducting regular access reviews can reduce the possibility of insider threats.

4. Remote functionality

With the growing popularity of remote work and cloud-based services, enabling secure remote access to data centre resources is essential. However, protecting against unauthorised access and other cyber threats presents additional challenges, requiring smart access control solutions with comprehensive capabilities.

5. Integration

Data centres often incorporate a variety of access control solutions, identity management platforms, and physical security technologies. By consolidating these systems, administrators can detect, monitor, and respond to security threats in real-time.

Integrated access management equips data centres to identify vulnerabilities and reduce risks while meeting compliance requirements. Unifying smart access solutions with other core security systems – such as intrusion monitoring, license plate recognition, and video surveillance – ensures only authorised users can enter the facility or specific zones. The integration also allows security teams to verify credentials, track activities, and address incidents as they happen.

6. Compliance

Operating a data centre requires adhering to specific regulatory requirements related to access control. To ensure compliance while balancing security and operational needs, operators should opt for robust and efficient smart access solutions.

7. Scalability

Additionally, these centres are often governed by complex access policies based on roles, responsibilities, and the sensitivity of data. Enforcing them can be challenging, especially in large organisations with numerous employees, contractors, and third-party vendors requiring different levels of access.

Announcing the new Salto KS subscription model

Add-ons and Additional Seats

Since you are now getting acquainted with our new subscription model, we must introduce you to two new terms: Add-ons and Additional Seats. Once you know these two handy concepts and how they work, you will have full transparency and control over your Salto KS plan and its capabilities.

Announcing the new Salto KS subscription model

What is an Add-on?

An Add-on is an optional feature you can add to your subscription. Add-ons are available to both Salto KS Lite and Pro customers, which means that all Salto KS users can select an Add-on to accompany their existing list of features. Our first Add-on available is Pods.

A Pod is a collection of locks a user should have access to (e.g., the building entrance, the social area, and the front door of their apartment). With this feature in Salto KS, building managers can outsource the access control management to Pod Members, allowing them to invite guests to their Pod. This feature enables building managers to offload some of the responsibility of management operations and save time.

What are Additional Seats?

Additional Seats can expand the limitation of certain Salto KS Pro features beyond the subscription voucher size capacity. Users can customize their subscriptions by adding Additional Seats for certain Pro Features. NET.Lock, i.e., locker management, is an example. For instance, in the case of NET.Lock: All Pro subscription sizes will support up to 192 lockers, and if, for example, a customer requires 193 lockers, they will need to purchase that extra locker individually as an Additional Seat.

Please note that Additional Seats will work differently depending on the Pro Feature. This is because each feature has a different component that can be purchased in addition to the maximum supported by the subscription. For NET.Lock: the component is lockers.

An updated pricing model and its benefits

In the former Salto KS subscription model, all voucher types included the same functionalities and were only differentiated by the number of users and IQs. Having an IQ-based subscription was not beneficial to users who wished to scale up their business. Now, we have updated our pricing model to improve our features' sales process and accommodate our subscription model to our customers' needs.

We have shifted to a feature-based subscription model which will help customers equip their sites with the right bundle of features that best fits their needs. This new voucher structure comprises two feature-oriented packages, Lite and Pro, which will be sold alongside the existing user-based Salto KS vouchers.

The process of purchasing a voucher is the same, i.e., you must contact your supplier/installer or Salto Systems Support to buy a new voucher. The only difference is that you now have the freedom to select the Salto KS subscription plan of your choice and customize it with Add-ons and Additional Seats.

A ‘Free Week’ for every new installation

Announcing the new Salto KS subscription model

The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Pod, Site, and Events

Blog Post Short Text

Our cloud-based access solution, SALTO KS, has just released its latest series of improvements to the SALTO KS Web App.

Blog Post Long Text

Our cloud-based access solution, SALTO KS, has just released its latest series of improvements to the SALTO KS Web App. The Pod, Site, and Events pages will look a bit different, but they are guaranteed to impact your productivity and experience! Like previous updates to our platform, the new layouts provide a cleaner and more organized display of your actions and data.

If you haven’t read our recent update, we started a project to align our SALTO KS platforms regarding user experience, style, and consistency. Our first improvements were made to the People, Locks, and Access Groups pages. Now, in this blog post, we will show you what’s new in the Pod, Site, and Events sections of your Web App and all you need to know about the new look. Read ahead for a bird’s eye view of before and after!

Pods section of SALTO KS

The new Pods pages of your Web App follow a similar style and structure to the People, Locks, and Access Groups pages. The ‘Members’ table has a more straightforward layout and is better structured with information about Pod Members and Pod Guests. This table also contains a new ‘Tags’ column to view how many tags are used from the ones available.

The main actions are in the Actions Header on the top of the page, where you have the option to Edit Pod, Add New Members, and Delete. When you click ‘Edit Pod,’ you will find the option to ‘Clean’ the Pod.

Once you click on a Pod, the menu options for the page are now presented in the form of four tabs (or chips) that you can select: Members, Locks, Tags, and Time frame.

The Locks and Tags tabs have a similar overview to the Access Groups page. When you select locks in the Pod, they will be highlighted in red to show you are removing them, and when you select locks not in the Pod, they will be highlighted in green to show you are adding them. This process works in the same way for tags in the Tags tab. Once you have made your selections, you can click the ‘Save Changes’ blue button below, and you’re good to go.

The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Pod, Site, and Events

SALTO KS page site

1. Site Overview Page

The Site Overview page has mostly had a makeover regarding its presentation of your Site’s significant information.

The changes for this page follow a similar structure to the previous page upgrades, including the following:

a.) A top navigation bar with two buttons: Edit Site and Transfer Ownership

b.) Cards containing all the essential information concerning the ‘Site details’ and ‘Site owner.’

c.) Mobile compatibility, with expandable cards that are easily readable on your mobile browser.

The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Pod, Site, and Events

As you might have noticed, the ‘Transfer Ownership’ button has moved to the top navigation bar. Overall, this page has a cleaner look and feel, with the content sitting neatly on your screen.

2. Site Hardware Page

The Site Hardware page is the most significant upgrade in user experience. You will notice that this page has a visibly different layout than before, with a new and distinct hardware table.

Like before, your detached locks and repeaters will be presented in sections with a drop-down menu for actions to the side. The page has all the same information as the old design, with only a few changes, which include:

a.) The search bar for IQs has been moved to directly above the hardware table on the left.

b.) The rows of the hardware table have indicated headers that were not present before. These are ‘Device Name,’ ‘Type,’ and ‘Connected To’.

c.) The table has been improved with better alignment, and the IQ tree has more clarity and organization.

d.) The lock icons are more realistic, making deciphering the IQ tree and utilizing the action menu easier.

e.) The status and Mac number have been made immediately visible.

The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Pod, Site, and Events

3. Lockers (GANTNER NET.Lock)

The Lockers page has a new name: 'NET.Lock' — i.e., lockers from GANTNER - a SALTO Group Company. This page has a cleaner layout and improved icons, similar to the Hardware page.

The locker mode and status are now grouped within the table's first ‘Name’ column.

4. Tags

In the Tags page table, you will notice that the Offline Access icon is now visible in the ‘Tag Number’ column, so you can see which tags have Offline Access enabled. When a tag is blocked, this icon is red, and when a tag is unblocked, the icon is blue.

In addition, a new column, ‘Pods,’ shows whether or not a tag belongs to a Pod.

Lastly, the Tags table has an actions menu on the far right of the row with 3 new actions: Disable Offline Access, Delete tag, and Block tag. You can Enable Offline Access or Unblock the tag depending on the status.

The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Pod, Site, and Events

5. Rights, Installer Access, Floors, and Tag Reader

These pages are similar to the stylistic changes explained above. The most visible updates are the addition of a toggle switch button and that all main actions are in the Actions Header on the top of the page; for instance, in the Installer Access page, the ‘Revoke Access’ button is now in the header.

Events Events pages of SALTO KS

The Events pages include Entries and Incidents. These pages have an updated layout with the exact same content.

The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Pod, Site, and Events

That concludes our overview of the latest pages updated in your SALTO KS Web App. We hope the changes improve your experience in the app and increase your efficiency and performance of operations.

Like with all our updates, we have kept you, our valued user, in mind and made all these mobile-compatible changes. With this, we come closer to our goal of aligning our platforms regarding user experience, style, and consistency.

Transform Visitor ID Management with BlueEntrance Space

Blog Post Long Text

In today's fast-paced world, buildings with high-volume traffic are at risk of unwelcome visitors and intruders. ID visitor management solutions like BlueEntrance Space use cutting-edge technology to help building operators address these challenges and provide seamless visitor management while delivering convenient access for authorized visitors.

What is ID visitor management?

Visitor management refers to the verification process for guests and visitors in a building. This process is not standardized and varies depending on building type, purpose, location, and management team. While buildings likely have an access control solution, they don’t always have visitor management solutions. Haphazardly or inconsistently managing visitors creates more work for building admins and can put building occupants and contents at risk.

Who needs a visitor management system?

Integrating access control and visitor management results in better security, improved efficiency, real-time visibility, insight into data analytics for better resource allocation and facility design, compliance and reporting, and an enhanced visitor experience.

Implementing visitor management systems is a modern approach that effectively tackles multiple challenges like security, compliance, digitalization, and access control. These systems utilize various tools and processes to monitor and record users in a specific area or zone. Upgrading your access control systems to include visitor management provides your guests with a self-driven and professional experience. It lets your organization conveniently gather valuable data, benefiting staff members and building managers.

How does a smart, keyless visitor ID and access management system like BlueEntrance Space work?

The electronic keyless door locks used with BlueEntrance rely on cutting-edge technology to grant visitors access without needing traditional keys or front-desk staff stationed in the lobby. Instead, BlueEntrance Space uses digital credentials – such as RFID SVN smart credentials, JustIN Mobile digital keys, or mobile QR codes – to authenticate and authorize entry. Eliminating physical keys through fast, easy, and contactless visitor registration provides enhanced security and convenience while offering centralized control and monitoring capabilities through the SALTO Space access control management platform. As a result, your building can have an automated and unattended lobby or reception area, freeing up employees to address more pressing tasks.

BlueEntrance Space offers numerous advantages. It provides robust visitor ID management and can incorporate SALTO’s convenient, contactless, and smart self-service kiosk models. The solution also offers visitors, contractors, and guests a secure, and streamlined access experience. It eliminates the need for physical keys, reducing the risk of key loss, theft, or unauthorized duplication.

Visitor ID Management Access Control
Visitor Experience with BlueEntrance Space

Benefits of using BlueEntrance Space visitor ID management software

  • Reduce wait times with streamlined pre-registration and automated check-in via a smart self-service kiosk.
  • Schedule and invite visitors. Once they receive an invite, guests can complete their profile in advance via smartphone to receive a QR code or digital key.
  • Keep check-in simple and completely keyless by delivering smart credentials to visitors.
  • Automate and enforce compliance with visitor access integrations and GDPR policy-based registration across all locations.
  • Integrate easily with SALTO Space smart access applications and add visitors directly into your access control system to ensure streamlined building access.
  • Receive real-time reporting to see how many visitors and staff are on-premise at any time, track guests and access incidents, and receive in-depth reports on visit details and host activities.
Visitor ID Management Access Control

BlueEntrance Space’s centralized visitor registration and ID management approach enhances security, streamlines operations, and provides valuable data and insights for effective decision-making in any building. Not only is BlueEntrance feasible for commercial or corporate applications, but it also has massive potential in a wide range of industries, including healthcare, education, hospitality, and more.
