In the last week of June, more than 300 digital nomads, remote workers, and freelancers made their way to a quaint mountain town in Bulgaria to take part in the Bansko Nomad Fest. With inspiring speakers, interactive workshops, community events, and lots of time in nature, the week-long festival was a true celebration of the location-independent lifestyle. Digital nomadism has already been on the rise in recent years, but with the increase in remote work opportunities, the community is set to explode. According to The Economist, by 2035, there will be 1 billion digital nomads in the world.
As one of the main partners of the event, our team at SALTO Systems was able to experience the magic behind the nomad community in Bansko first-hand. Previously, Bansko has been known for its ski slopes and old town, but over the last five years, it has become a notable hot spot for digital nomads, drawing in location independent travellers from all over the world and all year-round.
In order to create a customer-centric experience with our products, we believe in the importance of getting to know our end users and understanding their personal experiences, desires, and needs. At Bansko Nomad Fest, we were able to do just that. Coliving and coworking are all about connection, and having the opportunity to connect with the people who use our products daily in the stimulating festival environment was especially impactful.
To find out all the key takeaways from the event, we reached out to our Think Tank Partner, Leah Ziliak, Founder of The Coliving Consultant and a digital nomad herself.
Read ahead for Leah’s on-the-ground experience of Bansko Nomad Fest!
So, how did a ski resort town in the middle of Bulgaria become one of the top digital nomad destinations?
In 2016, Uwe Allgäuer and Matthias Zeitler founded Coworking Bansko, with the intention of not only building a top-notch coworking space but developing a real community around it. The results have been pretty incredible. Now, with multiple locations and 100+ members at any given time, Coworking Bansko has been able to foster an environment that supports entrepreneurs and remote workers, while cultivating an incredibly close-knit community.
With its picturesque location at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, it’s easy to see the allure of spending time in Bansko, but the real undeniable draw here? The community of Coworking Bansko.
Coworking Bansko has crafted its own unique community experience, one that makes its members feel at home right away. It’s not unusual for members to come for a week or two and end up staying for a few months or years. That’s the power of the community built in just these past few years.
Wanting to open the experience up to a larger audience, Coworking Bansko decided to create a festival to celebrate the location independent lifestyle and connect on an even bigger scale, and with that, Bansko Nomad Fest was born.
With attendees from over 30 different countries, the festival drew in crowds from all over the world. Israel and Italy also participated with their own Digital Nomad communities to join the international nomads who flocked to the festival. With 48% of attendees being women, it's clear that the work-from-anywhere trend is growing among female entrepreneurs and remote workers.
The festival itself was jam-packed with activities all week long, including professional events and workshops, alongside more community-based activities like bonfires, karaoke competitions, quiz nights, horseback riding, and pool parties. But, even during a quiet week at Coworking Bansko, you’ll find an entire schedule of events. With yoga classes, community dinners, skill shares, game nights, group hikes, and more, there are plenty of opportunities for members to connect on a daily basis. No matter your interests, there’s always something you can participate in.
With a strong interest in the coliving and coworking sector, the team at SALTO Systems had been hearing the buzz about Bansko for a while now and wanted to experience it first-hand. Nomad Fest was the perfect opportunity to connect with users and be fully immersed in the community.
SALTO Systems’ Christian Schmitz, Global Lead of Shared Living and Workspaces, and Cate Maoilini, Community and Partnership Manager, presented their talks on The Freedom of the Cloud’ and Growth in Tech in the CO to the main stage audience. Bringing technology to the shared living and working experience is all about creating both a sense of connection and a sense of freedom. Both SALTO presentations took an in-depth look at the user journey experience and the tech needed within the coliving and coworking industries. From communication tools to cloud-based keyless access solutions, the duo discussed how properly integrated technology has the potential to improve the customer experience from the very first touchpoint to the last.
Additional highlights of the week included SALTO’s Sharing Is Caring workshop, bringing together festival participants to collaborate and find solutions to real-life issues they were facing. Along with a Virtual DJ Party, various networking events, and impromptu meetups, SALTO was able to provide their own community experiences and bring further awareness to the possibilities that tech solutions can have within the industry.
Digital Nomads are on the cutting edge of all types of industries: travel, tech, coliving, and coworking to name a few. They’re not the average traveller. Nomads have a very unique set of needs and a unique set of values. They are experience-driven and with a location independent lifestyle, strongly prioritize freedom, which is part of the reason SALTO’s access control solutions are such a powerful tool within the coliving and coworking industry/sector.
One of the things that stands out most while spending time in Bansko is the collaborative, supportive spirit that exists within the community. The personal connections derived from coliving and coworking are immense, but the benefits extend even beyond that. Being surrounded by a group of people with different mindsets and backgrounds allows for an incredible amount of personal growth opportunities.
The sharing economy is about more than just coliving or coworking together. It’s about combining skills, creating together, and sharing experiences that can enhance life in real tangible ways.
One of the biggest trends in coliving right now is the rise in rural and destination-based coliving experiences. Places like Bansko are proving that there’s so much value in a community. As a coliving or coworking operator, if you’re able to create an experience that’s truly unique, people will travel around the world to be part of it. On top of that, rural areas tend to offer a lower cost of living, access to nature, and an enhanced quality of life that you simply can’t find in major cities around the world.
As the remote workforce increases, people are becoming more and more conscious about where they choose to live. If you can work anywhere, you can live anywhere too, right? It’s clear that the number of digital nomads will rise in the next several years. The numbers speak for themselves; an estimated 17 million people aspire to become nomads in the future. Analysts say that by 2035, there will be 1 billion digital nomads in the world.
As for those that are already living the nomad life in Bulgaria, and in various hotspots around the world? They are early adopters of the shared living/working experience and part of a rapidly-growing demographic.
Bansko offers community, ease of living, and the freedom to experience the world a little differently, factors that will one day become the norm. SALTO Systems has the ability to make a real impact within these communities by enabling seamless experiences and creating opportunities for connection through their solutions.
Christian Schmitz put it best, “Community is the key.”

What is the Next Generation of Smart Locks - What is it?
In a new video collaboration by SALTO and Group337 we dive deeper into what we believe "The Next Generation of Smart Locks" will be.
In a new video collaboration by SALTO and Group337 we dive deeper into what we believe "The Next Generation of Smart Locks" will be. The purpose of this collaboration is to spark a conversation—a change. We are hoping to help start a new language for the industry, and if we agree that the smart lock industry has entered into its next generation, we should agree we need to look, say, and act next generation.
In part 1, we are diving into the difference between smart, connected, motorized, and mechanical and what the next generation of smart locks will need to stay relevant.
In part 2, we will tackle the value beyond locking and unlocking. And in the finale, part 3, we reimagine door openings and our relationship with entering and exiting.
We plan to cover the different verticals such as single-family, multifamily, and commercial locks. We will speak to all of them generically and high level enough that what we discuss applies to all use cases. There are fundamental functionality and value creation that work across all verticals in the Next Generation of smart locks, and we want to cover them here.
Of course, this is just the beginning, and we can't cover it all in such a short amount of time, but we will do our best.
All right, let's get into it part one.
It is important to note a clear difference between smart, connected, motorized, and mechanical locks. Unfortunately, we sometimes mix them all and conflate their abilities.
If we are honest, most of the electronic locks on the market today are not smart. What they are, is connected. We went from mechanical to motorized, motorized to connected, and we still haven't gotten to what we all want, which is smart.
But we are getting there. One of the most significant barriers to our industry boarding a rocket ship and seeing that hockey stick growth and adoption we all expected to see by today is that we have not innovated the smart lock (enough). We have only iterated the mechanical lock. Motorized and connected were feature iterations off of mechanical. So think about it, we as an industry said, "what if the door opened itself? Well, if it's locked, that won't work, so let's automate the unlock function." So we went and took the same mechanical lock that we had before, updated it a bit, and integrated a motor into it.
Is it an advancement? Yes, no doubt. But it was not very smart.
Then the market and ecosystem said, "We'd like to take your motorized lock and have our system lock and unlock it. We want to control it." We also said, "wouldn't it be cool if we could lock and unlock via our phone or watch?" 100%.
And we were happy to do it, so we took the same motorized lock and added some radios and gave the ability for it to connect to other systems... introducing the connected lock.
Some marketing departments and analysts got excited and dubbed it "smart locks," but unfortunately, once the cool factor wore off and the inability to drive a consistent experience became a reality, what we ultimately had was a connected lock that, frankly, wasn't so smart.
But that is ok because, like many things, the market is shifting. New technology is being introduced.
As a result, new players are interested in the market, and end-user demand has increased, resulting in a renewed interest in smart locks.
So what does the next generation of smart locks look like?
- It is a reimagined platform—all of it, including the hardware.
- It is not a feature of a mechanical lock like a brass finish. It is its entity.
- Some use cases and end game functionality are unknown, which is ok because it is part of an ecosystem. It is an ingredient to a much larger solution.
- It is a software product with hardware that supports the experiences desired by end-users versus administrators and installers.
- It has safety at the core and safety as table stakes. It is a given and includes cybersecurity as well as hardened physical security.
- A team supports it focused on it day in and day out, not as a side hustle.
- It is a product line understood by leadership with the same importance and expectations as its mechanical brothers and sisters.
- Business plans are not predicated solely on yesterday's metrics.
- Distribution and hardware sales are not the only measures of success. It is time for a new spreadsheet.
- Hardware is used to grow the platform's adoption to unlock software potential exponentially, not get in the way of said growth.
The smart lock is this and many other things. But, more or less, the smart lock of today and tomorrow is a complete re-imagination. And those with curiosity and imagination will unlock it.

The world’s largest coliving gathering: Co-Liv Summit 2021
A common denominator for all pioneers is that they don’t stop for anything until they reach their goal. This is also the case with SALTO’s partner Co-Liv.
A common denominator for all pioneers is that they don’t stop for anything until they reach their goal. This is also the case with SALTO’s partner Co-Liv. This May they held the world's largest coliving gathering and even a global pandemic couldn’t stop them from making this online event a huge success.
As residential communities that host like-minded people, coliving has become a welcome solution to the growing desire to live in communities and the lack of individual real estate possibilities. This popular housing concept is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs, developers and professionals to contribute with smart technology and new innovations.
SALTO believes in a future built by people, that enhances the way we live and work by technology. A human-centered future that benefits from smart innovations that supports a healthy lifestyle, whether that’s in an office, a shop or a shared living space.
If you have been keeping an eye on the SALTO LinkedIn and Instagram accounts, you are probably familiar with SALTO’s biggest partner in the coliving industry, Co-Liv: a global association of coliving professionals that have the same beliefs on the future of living as SALTO.
Co-Liv unites those professionals who are looking to make a difference in the coliving experience. They believe that together, they steer the coliving movement towards an independent, flourishing, and stakeholder-centered industry that creates value for residents, cities, neighborhoods, operators, investors, and real estate owners alike.
The theme of the Summit was “Laying down the foundations for the future of coliving” and to date is the largest coliving gathering ever held.
On day one Alexander Rosdorff, Global Technology Partner & Integrations Lead at SALTO Systems was a panel member together with fellow industry experts Ari Dinar, Oscar van Wel, and Dimitri Belin, for the insightful discussion 'Deep dive into the coliving tech ecosystem’. The summit was topped off by the very first edition of ‘The Coliving Awards’ live-streamed from Paris, where SALTO’s Christian Schmitz, Global Lead, Shared Living and Work Spaces, and head of tech at Co-Liv, acted as a jury member and simultaneously accepted the award for ‘Best Sponsor’ in name of SALTO Systems.
"I believe that when you are together and you share information, doubts, fears, successes, and more, very strong bonds are created and this will remove many of the current roadblocks in the coliving movement." - Christian Schmitz, Head of Tech at Co-Liv and global Shared Living lead at SALTO Systems

By bringing the whole ecosystem together during the summit, Co-Liv has empowered the movement to grow even further. Small and big players now feel more connected and part of something bigger. With this summit, the word ‘Coliving’ has for once and for all evolved from just a buzzword to a word with meaning.
"This event was a great opportunity to learn about the often overlooked aspects of technology in Coliving, and bring them to light. Integrations being a vital part of this. Choosing the right integrations is essential to create a thriving community, and I enjoyed diving into this important aspect at the summit." - Alexander Rosdorff, Global Technology Partner & Integrations Lead at SALTO Systems
It was an honor to be part of this celebration which casts a much-deserved spotlight on the coliving community.
"This event showcased the core values that we strongly share with Co-Liv which are to educate, empower and connect. These are values that are still felt strongly by the whole coliving ecosystem. Winning the award at the Coliving Awards was the perfect ending to this incredible event.” - Caterina Maiolini, Community and Partnership Manager for Shared Living and Workspaces at SALTO Systems
To conclude this article SALTO would like to congratulate all winners, finalists, and nominees, particularly our partners: Co-Liv for their Ambassador Programme, OurDomain by Greystar, on their awards, and lastly, the winner of the PropTech and ConTech award for which Christian acted as jury member: Hmlet Coliving Software.
Co-Liv has just released a comprehensive report on the key highlights, exclusive industry statistics, key insights from panel discussions, and much more! Make sure to download the report through this link if you want to read exclusive insights from the world’s largest coliving gathering.

Digital Keys: Generating value for hotels and their guests; a win-win.
One platform, many channels. That is the power of a great guest experience app for hotels. These apps enable a direct communication line with individual guests so hotels can send out personalized offers and elevate the customer experience, increase guest loyalty and boost revenue for their business.
One platform, many channels. That is the power of a great guest experience app for hotels. These apps enable a direct communication line with individual guests so hotels can send out personalized offers and elevate the customer experience, increase guest loyalty and boost revenue for their business.
By incorporating Digital Keys into your guest app you can make an even bigger impact.
What is a digital key for hotel?
Access control solutions that offer the Digital Key feature, such as Salto’s Justin Mobile or Salto Keys as a Service, can be implemented as a standalone app. However, national and international hotel groups choose to embed the functionality into a branded guest mobile app, which is integrated with the hotel’s Property Management System (PMS). Research shows that when guests can find their key within the hotel app, download rates increase, and the in-app purchase rate goes up to an estimated average of $140 per room per year.
How does hotel digital keys works?
A Digital Key is stored in the hotel guest app on the guests mobile device. When presented to a lock, it uses BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) to open the lock. With Digital Keys the hotel administrator can grant designated access to guests, employees, or even delivery services whenever it’s appropriate for them to enter. The convenience of being able to open doors with Digital Keys is undeniable.
“Many of our loyal ‘Honors’ members are business travellers who are incredibly tech-savvy., We are thrilled our hotel is able to offer them this cutting edge Digital Key technology and give them an easier, more convenient stay.”
- said Rupert Hallam, General Manager, Hilton Adelaide.
The Hilton experience
Hilton Adelaide in Australia partnered up with Salto Systems and implemented the solution to their system. This gave the hotel the ability to integrate Digital Keys into their ‘Hilton Honors’ guest app. Within 24 hours of arrival, Hilton Honors members who book direct through Hilton’s channels can digitally check-in, choose their exact room from a digital floor plan and request a Digital Key through the Honors app. Hilton Adelaide will notify guests through the app as soon as their room is ready. Honors members with previous stay history can then head straight to their room when they arrive, pressing the virtual “unlock” button on the app when they’re within five feet of their door.
“With the app, Hilton Honors members can take advantage of a seamless and contactless experience. Digital Check-in and Digital Key allow guests to go straight to their selected room, bypassing the reception.”
- Rupert Hallam, General Manager, Hilton Adelaide.
Benefits of digital room keys for hotels
Hygiene and safety is, now more than ever, on top of mind for the hospitality sector. By incorporating Digital Keys into their business, hotels eliminate plastic cards being passed from hand to hand. The guest receives their key before arrival and can check-in without any (physical) contact at the reception desk. Together with the antimicrobial coating of the BioCote®, Salto lock range, you are guaranteed the highest form of hygienic protection..
Besides the hygienical benefits, there are more advantages of implementing Digital Keys into your hotel experience:
- Guest experience: with their key sent to them in advance, the guest can go straight to their room and start enjoying their hotel experience. From the hotel app guests have information at their fingertips; from concierge services toor spa treatment bookings and other in-app purchases.
- Flexibility: Digital Keys include information such as expiry date and time and authorised access. The Digital Keys can be very easily reprogrammed if the guest extends their stay, re-rooms or books a facility such as the hotel spa. Providing them with the access they need without any hassle.
- Cost and time efficiency: Hotels save costs of producing and sanitising plastic cards. With fewer guests using the reception, they can operate with less staff and potentially without the need of a 24/7 manned front desk.
- Up-selling opportunities: When Digital Keys are embedded into a guest app, hotels can present real-time and personalised offers on room service or spa treatments.
- Reporting: Retrieve full audit trails for new requirements such as contracting, and visibility of actual and attempted access.
- Insights: Having Digital Keys integrated in guest apps give hotels valuable data on the behavior, preferences and lifecycle of the guest, making it easier to optimize their hotel experience.
How to select the best digital key for your hotel?
For you to be able to get most out of integrating Digital Keys with your guest app you need to be aware of the following points when selecting the right access control partner for your hotel experience:
- Compatibility: Not all PMS providers integrate with mobile guest apps. Be sure to investigate whether your preferred PMS provider is able to integrate encrypted Digital Keys and push them to the guest experience app.
- Compatible Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) access points: Look for providers who offer a ‘turnkey’ solution that can be used for every access point:from guest to back-of-house. Some hotels, especially those that host a mix of residential and commercial are equipped with seperate systems. For instance one for the guest rooms and another for the base building (including, for example, lifts and car parks), which could turn out to be inefficient and cost increasing. Contact our Salto professionals to inform you about the possibilities for your business.
- Smart wireless locks: Not all access points need to be wired. Wireless on-line and real-time locking reduces installation costs. Find your ideal lock in the Salto lock configurator.
The future of the hospitality sector looks promising again after a period of setbacks. Operators are harnessing the power of Digital Keys to keep their (returning) visitors feel safe and secure.

Discover the range of SALTO KS services for cloud-based access control
The SALTO Keys as a Service product portfolio is packed with benefits and use cases. Yet, we must admit, even though we’re providing solutions for every type of business, it can be daunting to learn just exactly what this product range offers.
The SALTO Keys as a Service product portfolio is packed with benefits and use cases. Yet, we must admit, even though we’re providing solutions for every type of business, it can be daunting to learn just exactly what this product range offers.
To clarify and make a distinction between the type of products in the SALTO KS portfolio, we compiled this overview. Take a look at what SALTO KS offers and how we can help your business grow.
SALTO KS
SALTO KS has been developed to let your guests in more conveniently than ever. It lets you open doors from anywhere at any time. Whether it’s a visitor who arrived earlier than you or a new employee without a Tag, you can unlock doors for your guests from anywhere around the world. All you need to do is provide access via the SALTO KS app or tap a phone to the lock!
There are two ‘branches’ of SALTO KS: KS Connect and KS Services. Between the two, the sky's the limit. Integrations with our self-developed ‘Connect API’ is key here. By facilitating integrations we unlock many possibilities that can help your business grow and become more efficient, but above all, alleviate you from tasks you really don’t have the time for.
KS Connect - Technology Partners
KS Connect is designed to connect users and sites. By becoming a KS Connect technology partner, you are inviting new possibilities into your business – all created so you can offer an even better user experience. Do you already have your own management app in place for your business? Do you have all integrations set up except for access control? This is how SALTO can help you become a Technology partner and integrate cloud-based smart locks into your business.
As an example, one of SALTO’s KS Connect partners, Blue Water App, is using the integration with SALTO KS as a way to provide access to harbors in the Netherlands. When one of Blue Water App’s customers is sailing they can book a spot in the harbor with the Blue Water App. When they do so, a personal and secured code is sent to the customer which allows them to enter the harbor when they have arrived.
Another example is Nexudus, an award-winning platform that helps Coworking space managers to manage and scale their workspaces. Nexudus is using the KS Connect integration to provide access based on user profiles. As a KS Connect partner, Nexudus is able to provide a great user experience since their end users simply have to tap their phone to the lock of their pre-booked space. This is in addition to offering Coworking space managers the ability to track who has come into spaces and who hasn’t. This cuts costs, allows contact tracing in the event of virus outbreaks, and offers a great user experience.

Besides the benefits that come with SALTO KS, the mobile app also offers KS Services. Currently, SALTO KS offers three of these services via a partnership with Eagle Eye Networks, ButterflyMX, and Comelit – and there are more to come. When activated, you are able to see the specific service in your mobile app and use it. Similar to KS Connect, KS Services unlocks a multitude of possibilities such as a live feed of your front door when your phone rings.
Let’s say you own a building and you allow your residents to use KS Services so they are able to see who is in front of the door when their doorbell rings. If the mailman is at the door, but the resident can’t come to the door, the resident can just ask them to put the package in the dedicated mailroom, which your resident can give them access to. It’s even possible to have the mailman sign off through the app!
KS Custom
With KS Custom, you can customize the SALTO KS application and tailor it to your branding by integrating your logo and brand colors. KS Custom is suitable for companies with a large customer base looking for a smart lock solution and/or to enrich their access control offerings.
An example of a SALTO KS Custom client is Prosegur – a global benchmark in the private security sector providing companies, homes, and businesses with trusted security based on the most advanced solutions available on the market. Prosegur wanted to enrich its offerings in the alarm monitoring industry and expand to cloud-based smart solutions in response to customer demand.
Prosegur is using the exact interface from the SALTO KS mobile and web app, but as a KS Customer client, they have their own brand colors and logo.

La Pinada Lab, located in Valencia, Spain, is an open innovation center that paves the way for future living. It is the first eco-district that is co-created by its residents. The center focuses on the sustainability of the urban environment by facilitating processes that tackle key contemporary challenges such as renewable energy, waste management, sustainable drinking water, smart mobility, accessibility, alternative construction methods, involvement of diverse populations, and more.
The Lab works alongside corporations, startups, administrations, and other stakeholders with the ambition of not only designing an inclusive, sustainable, and meaningful environment but to develop solutions that can be applied and scaled up in different contexts.
Acting as a backbone organization, La Pinada Lab facilitates processes to test, deliver, and implement solutions to support a more inclusive, cohesive, and conscious way of living in the community. This results in shared living experiences in urban density and efficiency for all involved audiences like customers, operators, and third-party service providers.

Both SALTO and La Pinada Lab are firm believers in sharing, exchanging, and networking. As part of its program of activities, the Lab will host events around Smart Cities, construction, building management, and various related fields where SALTO and other partners and stakeholders will share their expertise and learn from each other.

Coworking spaces and their communities rely on management software to streamline processes for all involved. Fortunately, the solution to their needs lies in a single leading software, containing all the tools required to run a successful coworking environment: Cobot. With a single white-labelled platform to take care of all daily administrative tasks, Cobot enables you to onboard new members, streamline your billing, manage bookings and more, in one easy and intuitive interface.
As our KS Connect Partner, Cobot automates access control for coworking spaces; granting mobile access to members via Android and iPhone smartphones, defining access areas, and opening compatible smart locks and wall readers.
We decided to catch up with the Cobot team themselves to find out more about their journey and insights into their experience of scaling coworking spaces. Read ahead to hear from Kristina Schneider, co-founder of Cobot, current CPO, responsible for all things product.
Kristina shares her thoughts with us in the first to a two-part interview series with Cobot below!
Hi Kristina! Could you please introduce the company to our readers?
Cobot lives and breathes coworking—and we happen to build software for it! We started developing tools to automate coworking spaces over ten years ago, right as ‘coworking’ was starting to become a movement. Back then we ran our own coworking/event space in Berlin, Germany, and developed Cobot to help manage our own day-to-day operations. Today, Cobot is used by tens of thousands of coworkers around the globe, and our former coworking space is now our team’s main office.
Could you please explain in your own words, the integration of Cobot with SALTO KS and its significance?
One of the key worries of every coworking manager is to offer seamless access to their space, while at the same time, making sure the space is secure. SALTO KS offers one of the most advanced solutions to controlling access for members and guests. It’s also among the most frequently requested solutions from our customers! Using our integration, space managers can connect their Cobot plans and membership management directly to SALTO KS’s access control and rest easy knowing that access is handled seamlessly and that software takes care of the work.
With your expertise, what do you feel is essential for coworking spaces, office hubs, and flexible workspaces management software and how does Cobot accommodate this or these need(s).
Every workspace is unique. The software must be as flexible as our work, while at the same time, offer an absolutely reliable and robust set of core business features. At Cobot, we do both. Our software’s core functionality manages billing, payments, memberships, bookings, and even events.
Beyond that, we strive to empower spaces to fulfil their specific needs. We have a wide range of integrations, a build-your-own add-on toolbox, and for complete control: an extensive and well-documented open API.

How can coworking spaces scale by using the integration with Cobot and SALTO KS?
With our secure integrated access control solution, it’s simple to scale effectively. Organizations can reduce or even entirely skip staff hours that would otherwise have been spent managing member and guest access. Instead of worrying about who has the right keys and checking their calendar to see who needs access to what spaces, they have extra time to analyze and optimize resource usage and spend time interacting with the community.
It’s a clear example of how Cobot and SALTO KS enable growth while minimizing costs and maintaining the high standards of quality our customer’s prize.
What are the most valuable lessons Cobot acquired within the 10 years of experience helping spaces of all sizes grow their community?
Automate as much as you can—except human connections!
The most impressive success stories we hear from our customers are those where spaces lead with an honest mission to grow and foster a community. Spaces that put their heart into the people who use their spaces are the ones that we see succeed in the long run; we advise and support them in developing smart automation strategies so they can spend more time on accomplishing their mission.
Automate as much as you can—except human connections!
Thank you, Kristina and the team at Cobot, for sharing your insights and experience with our readers. We couldn’t agree more that human connections should lie at the heart of smart solutions, especially when it comes to collaborative spaces such as coworking.
Keep an eye out for the second part of this conversation, where we continue our talk with Kristina on the integration with KS, freelancing, and adjusting to a remote world.

Elevate flexibility in coworking with the Cobot and SALTO KS integration
A few weeks ago, we released the first to a two-part interview series with our KS Connect partner, Cobot.
A few weeks ago, we released the first to a two-part interview series with our KS Connect partner, Cobot. Cobot is the leading management software for flexible workspaces and is used by tens of thousands of coworkers worldwide. With more than ten years of experience, the company is the management software behind a multitude of spaces and coworking projects as they have grown their businesses and communities.
In our first interview, Kristina Schneider, Co-founder and CPO of Cobot, provided us with knowledge of her decade-long experience of scaling coworking spaces around the world and gave us insights into the success stories of their clients and the importance of growing and fostering a community.
For this second part, Kristina discusses the need for human connection as a freelancer, Cobot’s commitment to empowering spaces to fulfil their specific needs, and the company’s deep belief in the potential of coworking.
Due to the pandemic, we spent more time than usual inside our homes. How do you see the future of freelance?
We will see a huge flow of freelancers entering flexible workspaces. After more than a year of living through a pandemic, freelancers are itching to get out of their homes. Having started out as a freelancer myself, I remember two main challenges very well: Opportunities to expand my professional contacts, and seeking to avoid loneliness.
Both have grown extraordinarily difficult recently, and while cafés and public places might still remain closed off for freelance workers, coworking communities are already back (at least partially) and offer safe ways to connect.
Right now workspace management software is on the rise. What distinguishes you from your competitors?
With our decade of experience helping flexible workspaces of all sizes grow, we’ve been able to accommodate the complex billing and payment needs of spaces in many sizes, countries, and languages.
As our toolset has grown, our core features continue to incorporate more integrations, more add-ons, and more accolades—but we’re particularly proud of the stories we hear from managers who tell us how our support and core tools elevated them to a level where they were free to rediscover what they love about coworking. We’re not outsiders or trying to upsell spaces on features they don’t want, rather, we’re here to make growing flexible workspace operations easier and give every space the tools they didn’t know they needed.
Coworking spaces in over 90 countries use Cobot. Do you see a difference in demand coming from cultural differences?
We see strong entrepreneurial energy, especially in emerging markets, and in new spaces starting out with large budgets and huge multi-location projects. At the same time, we see smaller, often rural or small-town spaces pop up, who re-use existing locations and build spaces for just a handful of members.
Our main concerns are the differences in legal, tax, or privacy requirements, and ensuring Cobot is flexible enough to work with all of them. Our billing and invoicing system must be capable of serving a diverse array of spaces—and their tax offices. By providing them with these features our spaces are able to focus on their members and cater to their community needs.
Can you share valuable insight about Cobot that is not known to many, but should be in your eyes?
Can I say what I’m most proud of? I think it could offer an important insight into what motivates us and what guides our feature development and product.
Our company is guided by a deep belief in the potential of coworking, and our employees have used our company values as a springboard to assert their own influence on the company.
Members of our team developed the Coworking Code of Conduct, a free to use (and free to modify) code of conduct designed for coworking-related events. We believe strongly that in order for the growth of the coworking industry to be equitable and accessible, we need to collectively grow our community skillset. Internally, our team drafted and instituted a code of conduct to ensure that we were leading by example.
Our employees also formed a Betriebsrat (Works Council) and I’ve been proud of the way that everyone on our team has taken ownership over the success of Cobot. It’s essentially a worker-led structure meant to give every employee a say in our workplace decisions. What I’ve seen in the process has been that our team feels passionately connected with both the success of our product but also the spaces we help achieve their own goals.
When we consider what to develop internally, it's always about the value to customers. We consider ourselves invested in the success of every space and of the industry as a whole.
What would you like to see for the future of this integration with SALTO KS?
I would love to see this integration open up new possibilities for our shared users. I hope that years from now we lose track of how many customers have been able to use our integration to help their community develop new skills, promote entrepreneurship, break down barriers for underserved communities, and support those most in need of a leg up to achieve their potential.
And on a technical level, I can’t wait to see how both of our products will evolve to meet the needs of flexible workspaces in the future. This past year has only reinforced my desire to help coworking spaces grow with automation. We could never have predicted what challenges we’d face today—but what we’ve always known is that coworking is at the forefront of the future of work and that we’ll always need an agile mindset to adapt to the latest developments across the industry.
We believe strongly that in order for the growth of the coworking industry to be equitable and accessible, we need to collectively grow our community skillset.
