With approximately 1,200 units and more in development, Campus Living turned to Salto to find a streamlined access control solution that could meet the unique demands of modern student housing. Because most residents move in and out at the same time – typically at the beginning and end of the academic year – the system needed to handle high traffic and tight timelines with ease, while remaining secure, flexible, and user-friendly.
Managing access with traditional mechanical keys had also become increasingly impractical for Campus Living. Keys were lost, duplicates were unaccounted for, and manual handovers were required during busy move-in and move-out periods. This was not only time-consuming and costly – it also posed significant security risks.
With most residents arriving and departing around the same time each year, the pressure on systems and staff was intense. Adding to the complexity, Campus Living does not maintain permanent on-site staff at every location. This made a responsive, remote-friendly access solution essential, not just for daily operations, but to ensure a safe, welcoming environment for students and a smooth experience for property managers.
The goal was clear: implement a smart, digital system that eliminated the need for physical keys while enhancing safety and convenience. Campus Living wanted to create the feeling of open, inclusive, shared spaces without compromising on security. Access to apartments, common areas, and even mailboxes needed to be managed through a single, scalable solution – ideally one where a student’s smartphone could function as the key.
Campus Living selected Salto as its smart access partner, launching the implementation at Voll Studentby in Trondheim during an upgrade of the common areas and stairwells. This simple move would streamline operations, enhance security, and simplify daily management for building operators.

Combining Salto’s proven SVN (data-on-card) technology with the flexibility of wireless, networked electronic locks, the system delivers seamless control across all entry points – from unit doors and elevators to gates, stairwells, and mailboxes. At Campus Living in Carl Berner, Oslo, residents can even use their mobile phones as intercoms, as well as Digital Keys.

Managers gain 24/7 monitoring capabilities, real-time communication with the XS4 Com door intercom platform, and detailed audit trails, bringing peace of mind and operational efficiency to every location.
All user data and access profiles are managed through Salto Space. Access rights are automatically linked to apartment numbers. This means that when a new resident is assigned a unit, access to relevant spaces – such as common rooms, entrance doors, and their personal mailbox – is immediately activated. If a resident loses their phone or moves out early, access can be revoked instantly, ensuring continued security.
