The decisive factors for choosing SALTO were the flexibility of the SALTO Virtual Network for the wire-free door hardware; the immense integration possibilities, enabling required multi-application and integrations with third-party systems; the management software license model which means we only pay for additional functions, not extra doors or updates; and the highly competent support from the manufacturer.

The challenge
Text

Hirslanden Group took up the matter of what a homogeneous access control system across its 17 hospitals might look like when it became necessary to invest in three of the hospitals since the systems were outdated.

The central requirements included more efficient management, better control of people’s flow, and a higher level of security. The plan included the goal of getting 80% of employees to no longer use a mechanical key. Another important aspect was employee satisfaction with its hands-on use.

The Group had a framework agreement defining the basic equipment for the hospitals. The central specifications included the technology and components (electronic escutcheons and cylinders, wall readers and door controllers, electronic locker locks, and management software). It also specified which access points should be wired online, such as external doors and vehicle access points, and which should be virtually networked.

Access control had to cover sensitive hospital areas (i.e. operating theater and maternity ward), pharmacies, IT rooms, technical rooms, medicine cabinets, offices, warehouses, parking lot entrances, and medical practices rented by affiliated physicians. In addition to these the employee changing rooms and certain storage compartments were to be included.

Solution

The framework agreement now applies as a template for new access control systems across all the hospitals and outpatient practice centers, as well as in the Hirslanden Group corporate offices.

The system is customized to each facility every time it is implemented. The SALTO solution permits adjustments and specifications for each hospital. Individual solutions are also possible. For example, the distribution of laundered uniforms in the AndreasKlinik Cham Zug was integrated into the access control. This is now also being asked for in other group hospitals.

Business Case Key benefits
  • More security thanks to simpler key management, more targeted allocation of access rights and the elimination of uncertainty in the event of lost keys
  • Quick coding of credentials which frees up staff so they can take on other tasks
  • Avoids over-crowding in parking lots, benefitting visitors and physicians, and enhancing compliance with fire protection regulations
  • Integrated door monitoring with alarm activation means the security personnel are always up to date  about the current status of the most important doors
  • Multi-application enables access control, cashless payment in the cafeteria, pick up printing orders ("follow me printing") and parking management with one credential. In some hospitals, time & attendance is also integrated
  • Process optimisation, i.e. thanks to the HR Sync with SAP employees will only be recorded once in SAP and then imported into the access management system. This is a significant improvement on the previous situation, in which the data had to be entered separately into up to four different systems for each clinic.
