Business Case Intro Text

637 metres deep beneath the Mornington Peninsula lies a well of naturally heated, mineral rich geothermal water that feeds the outdoor bathing pools of the Peninsula Hot Springs. The water, with its natural healing and relaxing minerals, is brought to the surface, where it fills a series of outdoor bathing pools, nestled in nature between the rolling hills and dunes of the Peninsula.

A premier wellness destination, Peninsula Hot Springs attracts visitors from across Victoria, Australia and around the world and has won multiple tourism, ecotourism and luxury spa awards. From its modest beginnings with just a handful of pools, Peninsula Hot Springs has grown to include multiple bathing areas, a wellness and conference centre, an amphitheatre (offering ‘in-pool cinema’ and cultural experiences), saunas, steam rooms, an ice-cave and multiple cafés.

In December 2020 the business transformed again by introducing overnight accommodation, launching ten premium glamping tents, redefining the category. The luxurious canvas structures include ensuites, walk in robes and heated floors. Complete with in-room safes and lockable sliding doors, this is the first phase of the accommodation master plan at the springs, with incremental offers including a 50-room hotel planned for the future.

We’ve been delighted to support Peninsula Hot Spring through their amazing growth, adding more service offerings and scaling our solution as their business evolves. They certainly presented us with an interesting challenge with the glamping tents, but we came up with the perfect solution, to offer guests secure but simple access to their luxury accommodation in a format that they’re familiar with – branded wrist bands. We’re looking forward to continuing to support Peninsula Hot Springs on their exciting journey.

The challenge
Text

As the operation has grown, so have their access management requirements. Now a 24-hour, 365-day a year operation, Peninsula Hot Springs employs over 300 staff, and has offices in Mornington and Rye as well as the main site – which combined means they have over 80 doors.

To manage access securely, efficiently and in a way that would enhance the customer experience, they needed a single solution.

Initially, the issue was the cost and time needed for managing physical keys. Then, with accommodation being added to the mix, they needed to manage secure access to the glamping tents - not an easy task for a canvas structure. Appreciating that guests would likely be leaving their tents in little more than their bathers and a robe, they needed a seamless solution that began at check in, and was simple throughout a guests’ stay.

With further accommodation expansion on the horizon, they need a solution that will grow with them, and help them to offer an outstanding experience you’d expect from a premier wellness destination.

Peninsula Hot Springs implemented Electronic Access Control (EAC) in 2014, initially to eliminate the need for physical keys. They selected SALTO as the provider, and worked with local locksmith and SALTO partner Nepean Security - a division of Lockmart - to install a mix of wired and wireless door locks and provide staff and visitors with an access card or waterproof wristband fob. “We started small, with 10 doors”, says Phil Pinnuck of Nepean Security, “and over the intervening years have gradually added more, including the accounts office and IT offices, the Mornington and Rye sites as well as the accommodation.” Gantner, a SALTO Group Company, also provided the locker lock solution in the spacious and beautifully appointed change rooms.

“We manage everything through SALTO’s web application, which we can access from any office”, explains Michael Egan, IT Operations Manager for Peninsula Hot Springs. “We can quickly code a new fob or wristband, cancel and re-issue a lost card, and even remotely open or lock doors, without having to be on site. The SALTO system also gives us a full audit trail of who has accessed, or tried to access, which areas.”

As Peninsula Hot Springs has grown, SALTO has continued to support them, expanding the system and providing innovation.

“SALTO really proved their value as a partner when it came to the glamping tents”, says Michael. “Putting an electronic lock on a tent was a challenge, but SALTO came up with a really clever solution using the XS4 One model which integrated seamlessly with the desired guest experience.”

“When our glamping guests check in, they are given a single access fob in the form of a wrist band that gives them access to their tent, the gate to the bathing pools, and soon it will also be their locker key.”

The SALTO system offers exciting options for the future too: “We’re considering integrating SALTO into our Property Management System (PMS). That would mean that the guest’s access wristband could be automatically programmed through our booking system. We are also excited by the option of digital keys, where the customer’s access is via an app on their mobile phone. With JustIN mobile app, we could send them their key via the app, before they arrive, making check in even smoother.”
