In the heart of Porto, the SASUP University Residences provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for students facing socioeconomic challenges or those who can’t live with their families during the academic year. They comprise two properties, Ventura Terra Residence and the Jayme Rios de Souza Residence, and are managed by the Housing Service of the University of Porto. Now, Salto has implemented advanced access control solutions across these distinct properties.
The Ventura Terra Residence at Campus I is the newest addition to the SASUP accommodation portfolio. It was adapted under the Affordable Student Housing Program – Restructuring and Resilience Program 2021. Close to the city's public transport network of buses and metro, this property provides easy access to the University of Porto’s various faculties and a wide range of services.
It offers a total of 54 beds in 25 double rooms and two studios with kitchenettes, all with private bathroom facilities. Residents can access a kitchen, dining area, study room, and indoor and outdoor communal areas.
The Jayme Rios de Souza Residence, located near the university’s Asprela Campus, also provides easy access to Porto city centre. It’s known for its welcoming, family-type vibe, which appeals to resident students. With 104 beds distributed across 92 single rooms and six double rooms, all with private bathrooms, this residence offers a kitchen, a common living room for the entire building, and a study room on each floor.

As the newest SASUP accommodation, the Ventura Terra Residence required an access control solution that met the latest security standards to improve the safety of student living and offered flexibility to accommodate specific student needs. But, both properties faced unique management and security challenges before implementing Salto’s high-tech system.
With many students entering and exiting the residences daily, ensuring adequate security and control was difficult. Furthermore, the manual management of physical keys resulted in operational inefficiencies and the increased potential for loss or theft.
Another issue was the lack of a centralised access control and monitoring system. Without a unified platform, system administrators found it challenging to ensure compliance with security policies, identify potential breaches, and spot access violations.
The university was also determined to improve the residents' living experience. A more modern and efficient access control solution would support a convenient, secure user experience, allowing students to access facilities easily and safely.
Considering all this, Salto’s primary considerations before deployment were security, efficient operational control, and student living experience.

Today, BLUEnet wireless locks allow real-time access control management and monitoring in both residences. The student accommodation system administration team can configure, monitor, and control access during any event or emergency, ensuring a swift response as it happens.
The Salto Space smart access platform also offers various advanced features, such as the ability to create customised access profiles for different user groups, including students, visitors, contractors and staff. Giving users the appropriate permissions according to their needs and authorisations guarantees more controlled access management.
Another crucial advantage of Salto Space is its intuitive interface. It simplifies the administrative process and ensures a smooth learning curve for the management team in each residence. As a result, the university now boasts more efficient operations and more effective use of available resources.
Salto installed over 100 access points at the Jayme Rios de Souza Residence, including main entrance doors and student room doors. Of these, 98 are equipped with the XS4 Original+, one with the XS4 Original for Glass Door, and one with a Modular XS Wall Reader to update and activate new credentials for residents, visitors, and staff (and modify them) instantly. The result is comprehensive, effective coverage and robust access control throughout the residence.
At the Ventura Terra Residence, we installed 28 access points. The 26 XS4 Original+ featured heavily here, with its polished brass finish and black reader providing an elegant, robust, and secure touch. One XS4 Original+ with a brushed stainless steel finish and black reader was also installed, along with an XS4 Panic Bar Adaptor Kit covering all main entrances. Salto’s solutions range adapted efficiently to the properties’ diverse access needs.
