In a world increasingly reliant on cloud technology, it's natural to wonder: What happens if the internet goes down? With Salto KS, the answer is simple: Your access control system will keep working with the rules already in place before losing the connection.

Salto KS is a cloud-based access control solution that offers remote management, real-time updates, and seamless scalability. What truly sets it apart is its offline access feature, which ensures locks stay secure and accessible even when they can't connect to the IQ, keeping authorized users moving without disruption.

Meet the IQ: The brain of your site

At the heart of every Salto KS site is the IQ device. Think of it as the brain of your access control system. It connects wireless locks to the cloud, receives updates from the Salto KS app, and ensures that all locks are synchronized within seconds. Even if the IQ loses connection to the locks, offline access ensures that your system continues to function smoothly.

What is offline access?

Offline access is a feature that allows user keys, whether Digital Keys or Tags, to retain access to locks even if those locks lose connection to the IQ and, by extension, the cloud. In this situation, when the locks cannot reach the IQ to verify an access rule, they fall back on their locally stored data to decide whether to grant or deny access to that user’s key.

These access rights are stored locally in the locks, enabling them to verify credentials without needing to communicate with the cloud.

This means:

  • You can still make access changes via the platform.
  • Updates will sync once connectivity is restored.
  • Doors will continue to open for previously authorized users; no panic is necessary.

Who can use offline access?

Offline access works for users with three credential types: PIN, Digital Key, and tag. Offline access is automatically enabled for PINs; however, it must be enabled manually for Digital Keys and tags.

Access is granted to the key itself, not the user—so if someone has both a Digital Key and a tag, each must be enabled separately. If users get removed from an access group with access to a site, their keys automatically lose their offline access rights to that site.

Managing offline access

Only Site Admins can grant, revoke, and manage offline access. Here’s how:

  1. On the Salto KS web app, navigate to the ‘Users’ page and select a user.
  2. From there, click on the ‘Keys’ tab.
  3. For each key you would like to grant offline access for, click on its actions menu (three dots), which will give you the option to enable offline access.

Site Admins can view their users' offline and online keys and the access groups they belong to (therefore the locks).

Users with permission to change offline access settings can view and enable offline access for their keys in their Salto KS Mobile App.
