How Roommatik self-check-in technology is enhancing the guest experience with SALTO
Hotel and hospitality guests today expect automation and solutions that allow them to control when and how they check-in, check-out, and access a guest room.
At SALTO Systems, we’ve always invested in research and development to continually refine and improve our solutions. One of the key areas that we devote a lot of time and energy to is in developing integrations with other technology partners. This allows us to combine and incorporate other leading technology with our products, which results in transforming hospitality for the better by providing innovative products and services to properties across the globe. This teamwork improves the guest experience, hotel management operations, and optimises security for hotel properties.
Hotel and hospitality guests today expect automation and solutions that allow them to control when and how they check-in, check-out, and access a guest room. By delivering, together with Roommatik self-check-in kiosks, a comprehensive range of self-check-in machines for all types of accommodation facilities, SALTO helps improve and streamline operations while also boosting overall customer service that gives guests more control over their stay and experience. Self-check-in has one of the greatest advantages going for it – guests have the power to choose when they use it and at their convenience.
Self-services in hotels – in terms of automated check-in, checkout, secure payment, etc. – leave more opportunity for human interactions and provide your guests with a hotel experience they value and want to repeat by facilitating their check-in experience without sacrificing their security and comfort.
Self-service is also timely: automated services and self-service technologies in times of social distancing, and integrating self-check-in technology into service operations, could help address some of the issues around staff safety and new guest access to help practice effective social distancing.
To simplify the check-in process through automation, deliver the digital experience, and improve guest relations, the Roommatik solution is fully compatible and integrated with the SALTO Hospitality platform: ProAccess SPACE front-desk management software. It can also be connected to your existing PMS or Channel Manager. The Roommatik and SALTO integration makes it possible to completely automate the check-in process, meeting all country-specific legal requirements. Hotels & Convention Centers convert guest rooms & properties into Healthcare facilities to help fight COVID-19
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the hospitality industry has been hit especially hard as no one is booking hotel rooms or holding conferences. But solidarity during this trying time has released an inspiring movement.
Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the hospitality industry has been hit especially hard as no one is booking hotel rooms or holding conferences. But solidarity during this trying time has released an inspiring movement. Hotels and convention centers are offering their facilities to serve as makeshift healthcare lodging for patients who are no longer critical, but who continue to need medical care. This provides much-needed relief for public and private hospitals, allowing them to increase capacity and focus on more critical patients as the outbreak grows.
Separating the seriously ill from those with lesser ailments, and confining the latter in medicalized hotels and other facilities converted into temporary hospitals under medical supervision, has been one of the key adjustments made in China to deal with the coronavirus epidemic and alleviate the emergency services of hospitals, according to experts and doctors.

The so-called 'Noah's coffers' in China are beginning to be launched now in certain regions of Spain, Italy, the UK, and the US to provide care for mild patients who right now cannot continue to be cared for or remain in quarantine in overrun public health service facilities. These are hotel properties with certain sanitary support where patients who have already passed the most complicated phase of the disease, after five to seven days of hospitalization, will be able to be transferred to quarantine under the supervision of doctors and nurses. This allows government health policies to make hospital beds more available so that more serious patients can enter the hospitals. Medicalized hotels will allow hospitals to focus care on critically ill patients which represent approximately 30% of all confirmed cases in these countries.

In addition, over 300 hotels in Spain have reconverted their activity to offer healthcare services to both patients and professionals. Regarding medical professionals, hotels are also allowing them to stay in their properties since many healthcare providers are visiting from other parts of the country to provide care or live in the region but prefer this alternative to avoid exposing family members or housemates to the contagion if they were to return home after each shift.
The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting 209 countries and territories around the world. Currently, there is no approved treatment for COVID-19, but those who are infected can recover with the appropriate care that treats and relieves symptoms. Importantly, recovering from COVID-19 doesn't mean that a patient immediately returns to feeling healthy which is why these hospitality conversions are needed and greatly appreciated. But among the chaos, society and teams of scientists are working to tackle the killer bug – heroic medics are working tirelessly to help others and people are recovering in huge numbers!

China has closed down its last coronavirus hospital because there are not enough new cases to support them. Researchers from several institutes, including the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam, have published a paper (which hasn’t yet been peer-reviewed) that reports on a neutralising antibody for the new coronavirus. In other good news, the Cleveland Clinic has developed a COVID-19 test that gives results in just hours, and not days.
While there is still a great deal of suffering as the world actively combats the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s comforting to see the hospitality industry – which has taken such a big hit during this time – working with healthcare to provide what help they can.

Give Staff Full Control Over Facility Access - and Boost the Guest Experience - With ProAccess SPACE Advanced Visitor Management Module
Salto has a Visitor Management Module that streamlines visitor registration, tracking, and reporting and can drastically improve your visitor management while also elevating the guest experience.
Salto Visitor Management System
Managing visitors in hospitality – or any commercial environment – is an essential access control activity traditionally handled through paper forms or guestbooks. Visitors sign in at the front hotel or security desk which involves time on behalf of the employee - and a wait for the guest - that can drastically impact staff performance and the guest experience.
Salto has a Visitor Management Module that streamlines visitor registration, tracking, and reporting and can drastically improve your visitor management while also elevating the guest experience.
How does it work Salto ProAccess SPACE?
The Salto ProAccess SPACE Visitor Management Module allows you to modernize your approach by taking the visitor management process to the next level: paperless, more efficient, flexible, and secure. ProAccess SPACE visitor management allows you to assign and create credentials for new visitors, assign physical access rights, and track visitor movements with ease. You can issue visitor cards for a few hours, a few days - or for something in between - and all with a built-in cancellation date that will disable the credential automatically when it expires. This solution delivers a more flexible and efficient check-in and check-out system that enhances security and also meets compliance mandates for the collection and auditing of visitor data.
ProAccess SPACE visitor management users quickly discover that the visitor management module is intuitive and reduces the time required to register new and returning visitors. Hotel staff can even save time and pre-register visitors via the simple web-based interface, making it easier for security staff or administration to swiftly check-in visitors when they arrive at the front entrance.
Because the visitor module is embedded within the Salto ProAccess SPACE web-based interface, your operators and staff can manage visitors alongside the other security activities they routinely conduct. And because it’s the same Salto software they are accustomed to, operators do not have to install and learn a separate visitor tool.
When evaluating how you can improve visitor management - and save time and money for your hotel - consider exploring what the ProAccess SPACE Visitor Management Module can do for your property and the guest experience.
Smart, efficient & green: Battery-Operated-Locks offer a variety of benefits for Hotels and their guests
There has been a dramatic increase in smart devices belonging to the Internet of Things (IoT) in use by the hospitality industry. Power management has become a crucial challenge for these connected devices within hospitality systems.
How are hotel door locks powered?
Battery life is particularly important in an electronic access control solution that relies on battery-operated locks. If a user experiences product downtime due to dead batteries or gets frustrated with having to change batteries too frequently, they will likely choose not to use a battery-powered smart lock. This is rather unfortunate because the right battery-powered lock in an access control solution can improve both hotel efficiency and the guest experience.
Battery operated locks: the best solution for your hotel
Smart lock systems often contain many integrated circuits such as LED light-emitting signalling, RFID, and a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) microcontroller with wireless and mobile connectivity or motor driver. Salto’s battery power technology for battery-operated locks offers a cost-effective and far superior solution than others in the market.
Many traditional building operators still use wired access control and are perhaps unaware that wireless systems use a lot less energy and are more secure when monitoring what's happening 24/7 at their property. Because wireless locks are battery powered and only "wake-up" when a guest or staff key card is presented, they consume less power than that used by hardwired online locks. Wireless electronic locks provide better cost, convenience, and aesthetics than a wired solution - achieving wired system benefits without the cost of a hardwired system. Plus, wire-free, battery-powered locks are easy to retrofit on the variety of doors used in a hospitality setting including guest rooms, amenities, and Back-Of-House (BOH) operations.
There’s also the question of sustainability. With many businesses evaluating their carbon footprint and impact on the environment, some might ask how using a battery-powered lock can complement a green commitment. How “green” is it to employ a battery-based system? There are significant cost savings in moving away from a reliance on electrical power. This of course lowers the carbon footprint. Additionally, batteries used in a battery-powered electronic access control system can be recycled resulting in further reduction of ones carbon footprint.
Salto SVN data-on-card
Salto’s electronic battery-powered locks provide an access control technology that - together with ProAccess SPACE front-desk management software - allows stand-alone Salto smart wireless hotel locks to update, store, and send the latest access information and lock battery status from a user’s and guest smartkey throughout the building - wirelessly and remotely - via SVN. This data is captured from a guest or staff member access credential that’s used at a wirelessly-networked smart lock or an online IP SVN access point that can be located at strategic points throughout the building.
The “updating access points” download and revalidate user-related access plan information that is then used to permit or deny access. This smart solution allows hotel employees to manage and secure access control for an entire hotel property right from the front-desk. They can check battery status (to optimize maintenance and battery life) and obtain user event information in just a few easy clicks.
Salto BLUEnet Wireless real-time
The advanced smart technology that Salto has integrated into every BLUEnet generation smart lock also permits battery status management and audit trail recovery in real-time via a Business Automation System (BAS) integration with Guest Room Management Systems (GRMS). Hotels can now integrate seamlessly with a wide variety of Salto wireless locks that bring intelligent and dependable automation for guest rooms and operating enhancements that provide the most reliable, cost-effective, and technologically-advanced guest room system. Salto BLUEnet wireless is designed for doors where real-time control is required and can be installed as an independent system or can complement SVN. It dramatically reduces the cost of installing additional updating points in an access control system yet provides the capability of adding updating points where required thanks to SVN-Flex technology. The options for affordable updating points are endless: perimetral doors, emergency exits, hall doors, gates equipped with mechanical cylinders and much more.
Salto JustIN Mobile
One of the primary benefits of a wire-free electronic access control solution is the ability to easily incorporate mobile access use into a hotel property. Mobile technology now plays a vital role in the hotel industry. The most recent data reveals that almost half of travel searches begin on a smartphone. And the booking process is just the start. The real technological magic can present itself when the guest arrives and checks in and gains access to their room only using their smartphone and a mobile application! In addition to supplying guests the capability to unlock a guest room door, Salto’s mobile app - JustIN Mobile - can send lock audit trail and battery status notifications directly to the front desk.
Hotels are now presented with the opportunity to use smart technology to create meaningful, customized experiences that enhance a guest’s entire stay. By incorporating the latest in technology to help hotels provide efficient and smart battery-powered electronic lock solutions, Salto helps hotels improve both operations and the guest experience.

What does digital innovation and connected guests and staff mean for hoteliers?
Electronic access control has given hoteliers incredible opportunities in a variety of areas. Management can quickly and easily issue guest room access; the guest can even bypass the front desk and go directly to the room. Management can just as quickly and easily disable a room key if the need arises.
Smart electronic access control with smartphones or contactless cards helps hotels manage guest room access more efficiently, while also providing them with a wealth of information that can improve operations. Knowing when a guest isn’t in their room can give management an opportunity to save on electricity costs by automatically turning off lights and adjusting heating and air conditioning systems when the room isn’t in use. Creating reports on room access for amenities like spas or gyms can help management determine the best scheduling of staff for these areas.
There is a world of opportunity for improvements for guests and staff when it comes to implementing a wireless electronic locking solution and we are discovering more benefits every day.
How important is the mobile key? What should a hotelier look for in a solution?
Every hotel should incorporate mobile keys into their access control solution. The public – business travelers, in particular – now expects it.
Mobile key access provides benefits to both guests and hotel management. It makes travel more convenient for guests while improving operations for hoteliers. It provides guests with a hotel experience they value and want to repeat by facilitating their check-in without sacrificing their security and comfort. When selecting an access control solution for your hotel with mobile key technology, hoteliers must insist on a product that is, above all, secure. It should also provide instant key updates or key cancellations in the event the guest no longer should have room access. Mobile key management should use real-time access rights changes, audit trails, and blacklisting of lost keys. It should also ensure that no information is stored in the cloud and that any information collected or used is used only as a temporary bridge.
A mobile solution for hospitality must also be compatible with the variety of mobile devices and electronic lock products on the market and be able to integrate with existing hotel systems.
What are the key benefits of an electronic locking solution with mobile key technology?
Benefits include increased security and fraud prevention by improving control of staff access and management of their access rights; lost key instant cancellation for staff and guest security and peace of mind; and automatic guest key cancellation after check out for increased security.
Cutting-edge mobile technology, together with electronic wireless locking solutions, means the end of lost key hassles, expense, and waste. Guests open their room door and the app automatically sends confirmation that the door has been opened back to the front desk, even for doors equipped with offline electronic locks.
How do technology partners work together to enhance the guest and staff experience?
Access control is just one part of an overall security solution and management system. SALTO has long understood that to provide the most technologically-advanced electronic access control products we must partner with other Hospitality industry leaders to develop integrations that deliver a comprehensive – and seamless – solution for any hotel property type and size. SALTO has partnered with a number of Hospitality leaders to develop integrations including Inncom, Telkonet, Interel, Lutron, Ariane, Zaplox, OpenKey, Intelity (formerly KeyPR), Digivalet, StayNTouch, Monscierge, and multiple PMS providers.
What are the expected technology trends in electronic access control for the hospitality industry for 2019?
Access control is rapidly becoming about more than just electronic locks and security. It’s an opportunity to provide a better guest experience and improve hotel management. Because access control is a central part of the entire guest experience, it’s a way to increase customer satisfaction – which boosts the bottom line. If the guest can open their hotel room with a smartphone and use that same mobile app to check in, check out and make future reservations, then that positive experience is one that the guest will likely be influenced by when planning their next trip.
Salto’s Universal Energy Saving Device (ESD) system achieves savings and comfort
No guest key detection needed and no complex wiring for installation & setup.
Energy usage is one of the highest operating expenses the hotel industry incurs and remains the second-largest cost hotels have to contend with, right behind labor. The cost of electricity has risen drastically in the past few years and will only continue to rise. On average, 90% of wasted electricity usage comes from the guest room, which can be your property’s most unmanaged resource (a guest room Air Conditioning/Heating (HVAC) system can represent 70-90% of that wasted electricity). Conservation is quickly becoming the cheapest and easiest solution to the problem.
The Salto Universal ESD system allows hotels to optimize energy consumption by turning off lighting and adjusting climate control systems when guests are not in the room for long periods of time.
The hotel HVAC and lighting systems receive room status (occupied/unoccupied) from the sensors and, as a result, activate or deactivate the room’s lights, air conditioning or heater while maintaining a comfortable temperature (which is configured and preset by management). The maximum level of efficiency is reached if there is also a door or window sensor to differentiate between the use of air conditioning and lighting, depending on whether the windows are open or closed.
The system components and Salto’s Universal ESD ecosystem uses infrared detectors and advanced wireless technology. Installation and set up is very simple and reliable and can be accomplished in approximately 20 minutes, ensuring your guest rooms remain available for sale.
Reduction in electricity use can be easily evaluated and will vary by hotel depending on the facility size, climate, geographical location and other factors.
How does it works Salto energy saving device?
- Detects whether or not a guest room is occupied through information transmitted to the Universal ESD control module by the passive motion infrared detector and micro door sensor.
- When a guest room is occupied, the system allows the guest to have full control over all temperature settings and lighting.
- If the system detects an unoccupied guestroom, the operation becomes regulated by the control module, which initiates your customized energy-saving settings, i.e., temperature reduction, etc.
- Unoccupied guest room temperatures are pre-determined by hotel management, allowing control over electricity usage while maintaining maximum guest room comfort.
When the guest room is occupied
- Guest enters the room and the door micro switch ‘knows’ the room is occupied.
- Motion wireless detector detects movement.
- System is in “occupied” mode, so the guest has full control of heating, cooling and lighting.
When the guest leaves the room unoccupied
- Guest leaves the room and the door micro switch “knows” someone may have left the room.
- Motion detector “looks” for movement for the next 60 minutes (or a duration set by property management). If movement is detected, the system remains in “occupied” mode.
- If no movement is detected, the system goes into “unoccupied” mode, turns off the lights and sets the air conditioner or heater to a temperature preset by property management.
System features and benefits of Salto ESD
- Save 25-40% on air conditioning and heating costs.
- Does not compromise guest comfort.
- Wireless and battery-operated plug-and-play installation, regardless of construction type.
- Avoids unnecessary energy consumption when the guest is out (i.e., costly air conditioning cooling an empty room).
- 2 relay outputs – one for lighting and one for air conditioning.
- DIN rail fitting hardware for easy installation.
- Different configuration cards can configure the motion energy saver factory configuration to custom installation requirements.
System Ecosystem & Architecture
- lush-mounted motion detector/sensor or surface-mounted motion detector/sensor.
- Universal ESD main control module.
- Wireless door detector/sensor.
- Wireless window detector/sensor.
- Configuration proximity cards.
