Salto’s industry-leading smart access solutions made a splash at Security Essen, the sector’s biggest biennial event.

Security Essen is the leading exhibition and trade fair for the security industry. Held in Germany from 17-20 September, the four-day event saw over 20,000 trade visitors from 86 nations visit, a 17% increase in attendance from the previous edition. 

Salto unveiled an eye-catching booth to an enthusiastic reception. Centred on the theme ‘Smart Access Reimagined’, it highlighted our unwavering commitment to industry-leading access control innovation, and the strategic work required to improve facilities’ operations and create safer, smarter buildings. 

Salto at Security Essen ‘24 

Every two years, Security Essen provides an exceptional platform for over 10,000 industry professionals to network and engage with the security technology sector. The event isn’t renowned solely for being hosted at the Messe Essen, one of the largest trade and exhibition spaces in the country. It’s also recognised globally for introducing visitors to some of the most advanced security and access control technologies on the market—Essen ‘24 drew some 500 exhibitors from 36 countries. 

While the event has changed and evolved over time, it remains a vital platform for smart access providers like Salto. This year, between 2,000 and 3,000 visitors passed through our booth. With this increased exposure, we’re able to present to a wider audience Salto’s newest innovations that are transforming how users access, operate and manage smart buildings. 

New product announcements and launches 

When it comes to high-tech security and access control, Salto regularly breaks the boundaries of what’s possible. Security Essen was no different; attendees learned how we’re redefining the smart access industry by being allowed to test the extensive new capabilities across our Salto Space, Salto KS, and Salto Homelok platforms.  

Besides these powerful smart access platforms, Salto stood out at Security Essen by presenting several other new solutions and innovations. These included:

Attendees also witnessed how we’ve taken access control to the next level by supporting greater integration. In addition, visitors to our booth were able to explore more of our interconnected ​Salto solutions ecoystem. Specifically, they discovered our new, all-in-one smart access and locker management, ID Visitor Management platform and our upgraded ​​mobile access experience.

Our booth featured demo workstations for various solutions and platforms. This move allowed attendees to visualise how Salto’s smart access solutions could improve their facilities’ security, operations, and daily user experiences. A live avatar show brought the future of face-recognition-driven access control into sharp focus. Rounding off the engaging experience was a holographic display, showcasing upcoming product launches in an attention-grabbing 3D animation.

What is MASA? 

MASA is an industry-led collaboration to improve application security through third-party security assessments based on industry standards. Via the MASA program, Google recognizes mobile developers who have had their applications independently validated against a set of security best practices for the Android Platform. Salto has passed the review through a certified security laboratory specialised in pen testing called ‘Dekra’. This is done by cybersecurity experts who use the latest penetration testing methodologies to try to find the weakest spot in networks. By identifying weaknesses in an early stage, it is easier to alleviate future complications. The goal of passing these ‘pen-tests’ is to ensure safety in Google Play and the Android ecosystem and provide consumers with more transparency and an overall secure feeling when using the app.

Traditional incident notification systems often lead to information overload and significant delays in response. Operators and systems administrators manage access for facilities – changing access rights, creating new user profiles, and monitoring and securing sites – but at the same time, are bombarded with alerts, from minor issues such as low battery warnings to major security breaches. This not only overwhelms them but also increases the risk of critical alerts being missed. • Delegated responsibilities: The new system enables both Site Owners and Site Admins to receive and manage notifications based on their interests and role. This delegation helps distribute notifications more evenly and enhances operational efficiency. Previously visible only to Site Owners, notification settings can now be independently managed by Site Admins, although these settings are disabled by default and must be changed. 
• Customization of alerts: Site Admins can now tailor the system to notify them about specific types of incidents, ensuring that each alert is relevant and actionable. Additionally, users can choose to receive notifications for specific locks, allowing for even more precise control over the security monitoring of access points. 
• Flexible notification methods: Site Admins can choose to receive alerts through emails or push notifications through the Salto KS app, selecting the method that best fits their immediate needs.  

Salto Space: Physical access and incident management made easy 

The Salto Space access control platform offers a comprehensive set of features for managing access and security, including the ability to configure alarm events to trigger specific actions in response to various scenarios.  

By leveraging Salto Space’s access control management software alarm events feature, businesses and organizations can elevate incident notification and response mechanisms. The ability to configure specific actions for different scenarios, combined with the platform's user permissions and audit trail capabilities, empowers security staff and operators with the necessary tools to effectively manage access-related incidents. 

• Smart lock connectivity: Detects the loss of connection to a lock, triggering notifications such as email alerts to relevant stakeholders. This proactive approach to monitoring access points ensures swift response to potential security breaches. 
• Sensor signal control: Enables users to integrate sensor inputs with control unit (CU) outputs, allowing for the configuration of specific actions in response to sensor signals. In the demonstration, a physical button simulated a sensor signal, triggering an alarm event to control the action of a relay on the CU, in this case, a beeper. This level of control over sensor inputs and corresponding responses enhances the platform's incident notification capabilities. 
• Door-triggered lockdown: Another highlight of the demonstration was the use of alarm events to enable a lockdown area when a certain door is opened. This feature is crucial for managing security incidents and ensuring rapid response to unauthorized access attempts. 
• Online monitoring: The online monitoring functionality gives users the ability to monitor and control the real-time status of online access points. Additionally, it empowers users to execute actions on doors, such as activating Emergency Open or Emergency Close modes. With online access, the denylist can be automatically transmitted to doors, eliminating the need for manual updates at each individual door.  

Homelok: Access control incident notifications for residential and multi-family properties 

With Salto Homelok's SVN keyless and cloud-based access control platform for residential and multi-family properties, managing access has never been easier. The platform offers quick online administration, giving property managers and residents seamless control over every entry point in the building.   

Salto Homelok's administrator activity screen provides a comprehensive list of events ordered by date and time. Users can easily track activities such as user creations, door unlocks, and access denials. This feature allows property managers to stay informed about all access-related actions within their properties. 

• System Events: System Events are triggered by user actions within the software, typically by individuals with management roles in Homelok. Examples of System Events include user creations, access modifications, and key assignments. 
• Device Events: Device Events are generated by access points and doors within the installation and are primarily initiated by keyholders gaining access. Examples of Device Events include door unlocks by users, access denials, and firmware updates. 
• Unit Activity Monitoring: For property managers, Homelok offers unit-specific activity tracking. In addition to the main activity section, managers can view unit-related events such as unit creations, move-ins, move-outs, and deletions. This allows for a detailed overview of activities specific to individual units within the residential properties managed through Homelok. 
• SVN Events – Offline Event Registration: The Salto Homelok cloud-based platform introduces a revolutionary feature known as offline events within SVN (Salto Virtual Network). This capability allows the system to capture user and access point events, such as a user unlocking a door, and record them in the activity section – even when both the lock and the user's phone or credential are offline.

Recent enhancements to the Salto KS and Space smart access platforms greatly improve incident notification management across different industries, making it easier to tailor responses to specific building needs:  

• Working Spaces: Operators in coworking spaces can delegate notification responsibilities to system administrators like office managers and technical staff. Office managers can get alerts for unauthorized access attempts, and technical staff can be notified about low battery incidents and system malfunctions, ensuring a secure and seamless working environment.  

• Hospitality: Property owners and managers can delegate notification responsibilities to system administrators, such as hotel front desk staff and maintenance staff. Security managers, for example, can receive immediate notifications for guest check-in, privacy, doors left open, while maintenance staff can be alerted about low battery incidents, ensuring swift action and smooth operations.  

• Residential: Property managers can tailor the notification system and delegate alert responsibilities to system administrators like security personnel and homeowners. A convenient smart access solution for residential properties, connecting access control to security infrastructure to manage any access point allows property managers the capability to receive alerts about unauthorized entry attempts while homeowners are sent notifications about door status changes and low battery issues.

• Education: Manage staff, student, and visitor access to buildings or restricted areas on campus grounds using a role-based system with instant detection of individuals at access points. Receive instant notifications and configure customized responses for multiple crisis levels. Enable area-specific protocols for emergency lockdowns or openings. Incorporating electronic door locks for schools improves school security and crisis management plans.

In today's world, the importance of sustainability cannot be overstated. SALTO becomes B-cycle accredited battery steward.

SALTO Oceania is now a proud B-cycle Accredited Battery Steward via the government-approved Battery Stewardship Council’s (BSC) B-cycle Scheme. SALTO pays a voluntary levy on the lock batteries it imports into the country to fund the B-cycle scheme.  

As part of their joint commitment, SALTO and Local have partnered with Ecobatt, a BSC-endorsed battery recycling company based in Melbourne, to set up recycling receptacles at Local’s flagship apartment project in Kensington, to ensure that all the spent batteries within its community, including those from SALTO smart locks, are recycled responsibly. 

Commitment to environmental properties and Net Zero operations.

SALTO and Local are deeply committed to creating sustainable living spaces that prioritize the environment. The buildings are set up to operate at net zero, meaning they strive to produce minimal waste, maximize renewable energy utilization, and improve the overall connection, comfort, and quality of the community.

By providing Ecobatt recycling receptacles at Local Kensington, Local, and SALTO are ensuring that all of the community’s batteries, including those within its smart access control system, can be recycled in the most environmentally responsible way possible at Ecobatt’s state-of-the-art facilities in Campbellfield. 

"At SALTO, we too are 100 percent committed to sustainability and reducing our impact on the environment," said Cedric Duigou, SALTO APAC Living Spaces Lead. "When Local approached us to explore the recycling of our lock batteries, we were excited to implement this initiative together.” 

Creating a closed-loop lifecycle for responsible battery recycling.

To extend the initiative beyond its residents, Local will grant the general public access to Ecobatt receptacles placed in the staffed lobby, along with communication and education programs, to encourage wider community involvement in the scheme. 

Lithium Australia stated that more than six million kilograms of alkaline batteries are consumed nationally each year. In 2019, the BSC estimated that, at the end of their useful life, 97 percent of those batteries were disposed of in municipal waste streams and reported to landfill.

Since its inception in January 2022, however, the B-cycle Scheme has collected and recycled over three million kilograms of spent batteries.
