Your ultimate guide to offline access in Salto KS
In a world increasingly reliant on cloud technology, it's natural to wonder: What happens if the internet goes down?
In a world increasingly reliant on cloud technology, it's natural to wonder: What happens if the internet goes down? With Salto KS, the answer is simple: Your access control system will keep working with the rules already in place before losing the connection.
Salto KS is a cloud-based access control solution that offers remote management, real-time updates, and seamless scalability. What truly sets it apart is its offline access feature, which ensures locks stay secure and accessible even when they can't connect to the IQ, keeping authorized users moving without disruption.
Meet the IQ: The brain of your site
At the heart of every Salto KS site is the IQ device. Think of it as the brain of your access control system. It connects wireless locks to the cloud, receives updates from the Salto KS app, and ensures that all locks are synchronized within seconds. Even if the IQ loses connection to the locks, offline access ensures that your system continues to function smoothly.
What is offline access?
Offline access is a feature that allows user keys, whether Digital Keys or Tags, to retain access to locks even if those locks lose connection to the IQ and, by extension, the cloud. In this situation, when the locks cannot reach the IQ to verify an access rule, they fall back on their locally stored data to decide whether to grant or deny access to that user’s key.
These access rights are stored locally in the locks, enabling them to verify credentials without needing to communicate with the cloud.
This means:
- You can still make access changes via the platform.
- Updates will sync once connectivity is restored.
- Doors will continue to open for previously authorized users; no panic is necessary.
Who can use offline access?
Offline access works for users with three credential types: PIN, Digital Key, and tag. Offline access is automatically enabled for PINs; however, it must be enabled manually for Digital Keys and tags.
Access is granted to the key itself, not the user—so if someone has both a Digital Key and a tag, each must be enabled separately. If users get removed from an access group with access to a site, their keys automatically lose their offline access rights to that site.
Managing offline access
Only Site Admins can grant, revoke, and manage offline access. Here’s how:
- On the Salto KS web app, navigate to the ‘Users’ page and select a user.
- From there, click on the ‘Keys’ tab.
- For each key you would like to grant offline access for, click on its actions menu (three dots), which will give you the option to enable offline access.
Site Admins can view their users' offline and online keys and the access groups they belong to (therefore the locks).
Users with permission to change offline access settings can view and enable offline access for their keys in their Salto KS Mobile App.
Key takeaways
- Offline access ensures reliability, even when the system is offline.
- Master Keys always get priority and are guaranteed offline access.
- Site Admins have full control over assigning and managing access.
- Salto KS is built to keep your doors open and secure, no matter the circumstances.
Salto KS combines the power of the cloud with the resilience of local storage, giving you peace of mind and uninterrupted access. Whether you're managing a coworking space, an office, or any other facility, offline access ensures that your security never skips a beat.

Reimagining Hospitality: the role of PMS integration in smart access ecosystems
The future of Hospitality lies in integration. A connected ecosystem of smart systems enables hoteliers to deliver the kind of experience today’s guests expect: personalised, efficient, and secure.
The future of Hospitality lies in integration. A connected ecosystem of smart systems enables hoteliers to deliver the kind of experience today’s guests expect: personalised, efficient, and secure.
In today’s competitive Hospitality landscape, guests’ expectations are higher than ever. Travelers’ demand seamless, contactless, and personalised experiences from the moment they book to the moment they check out. Behind the scenes, this requires deep integration between the systems that power hotel operations – especially the Property Management Systems (PMS) and smart access control solutions.
At Salto, we believe that access control is no longer just about security and accessing hotel properties; it’s about enabling frictionless, digital-first guest journeys that begin before guests even walk through the door.
So let’s explore the critical role of PMS platforms, the growing importance of integrating them with smart access systems, and how Salto’s innovative ecosystem drives the future of hospitality.
PMS: the heart of hospitality operations
A PMS is essential software that manages the day-to-day operations of hotels, resorts, and other hospitality properties. It’s the central nervous system and digital heart of any modern hotel, handling everything from bookings, guest profiles and stays to room allocations, payments, housekeeping, and more.
But while the PMS handles operational data, it becomes truly powerful when integrated into a wider digital ecosystem – particularly with access control systems like the smart solutions offered by Salto. That’s when your PMS unlocks new levels of convenience, security, and efficiency, streamlining workflows and consolidating operationally critical information.
However, the hospitality industry is witnessing significant shifts in PMS technology. Legacy, on-premise software is giving way to cloud-based, API-enabled platforms that offer greater flexibility, scalability, and integration capabilities. These modern PMS solutions do more than handle operational tasks. They’re evolving into dynamic tools designed to enhance the overall guest journey – from personalised bookings and Digital Keys to communications, payments, loyalty programs, and seamless experiences throughout their stay.
Cloud-based PMS systems enable instant data synchronisation across departments and third-party solutions alike. This empowers hotels to respond quickly to guests’ needs and optimise resources. It’s signaling a shift in the role of the PMS from a standalone tool to a comprehensive hub that facilitates connectivity across various hotel systems and devices.
A tightly integrated PMS and access control solution allows hoteliers to streamline check-ins, reduce waiting times, improve room turnover efficiency, and deliver more secure, automated access, from staff keycards to mobile guest keys.
Smart access and connected rooms: the new guest experience standard

Why these certifications matter
In a market where standards are constantly evolving and customer expectations are higher than ever, certifications like EN 50131-3 and EN 60839-11-1 are increasingly seen as essential. They serve as a mark of trust, especially in sectors where electronic access control must integrate seamlessly with intrusion alarm systems.
In many regions, these certifications are now required by law – particularly in projects where incidents can trigger law enforcement or emergency alerts. In other cases, they are mandatory in tenders across both public and private sectors. For developers, installers, and system administrators, working with certified products is quickly becoming the norm.
Salto’s new certifications explained
Our new certifications fall into two broad categories, including:
- EN 50131-3: An EU standard outlining the requirements for intrusion and hold-up alarm systems (I&HAS) with specific or non-specific wired interconnections, or with wireless connections. These requirements also apply to the components of an I&HAS installed typically on the external structure of a building, such as auxiliary control systems or warning devices.

What you need to know about the EU’s new NIS 2 Directive and DORA – and how Salto fits in
Keeping up with regulatory changes helps organisations stay safe in a rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape.
Keeping up with regulatory changes helps organisations stay safe in a rapidly evolving cybersecurity landscape.
In the realm of cybersecurity, safeguarding critical infrastructure and ensuring operational resilience have never been more essential. Recognising the growing complexity of cyber threats, the European Union has introduced legislative measures like the Network and Information Security Directive and the Digital Operational Resilience Act to establish stringent cybersecurity standards. Salto’s smart access and identity management solutions are designed to support organisations in achieving compliance with these vital frameworks, offering robust security and operational continuity.
Here is a comprehensive guide to navigating these directives and ensuring your organisation's cybersecurity readiness.
Understanding the NIS 2 Directive
The Network and Information Security Directive (NIS 2), effective as of October 18th, sets a high common level of cybersecurity for companies operating across the EU. Expanding on its predecessor, the NIS Directive, it emphasises enhanced security measures for network and information systems, as well as improved incident reporting protocols.
NIS 2 mandates that European companies which fulfill certain conditions adopt technical, operational, and organisational measures to manage cybersecurity risks effectively. The Directive covers companies within 18 sectors, including energy and critical infrastructures, finance, healthcare, manufacturing facilities, and public infrastructure.
Conducting a comprehensive risk assessment is the first step toward aligning processes with the requirements of NIS 2. This involves identifying and evaluating potential cyber threats that could impact business operations. Other key aspects of NIS 2 compliance include:
- Identity management, authentication, and access: This requirement encompasses a broader set of entities, including suppliers, with varying size thresholds.
- Data security: This element imposes stringent security measures to mitigate risks and protect systems from cyber threats.
- Quick detection and response to cyber incidents: NIS 2 calls for timely reporting of cybersecurity incidents to designated authorities.
- Continuous security monitoring: Companies are required to ensure security standards are upheld at all times.
What is DORA?
The Digital Operational Resilience Act (DORA), effective from January 2025, focuses on strengthening IT security within the financial sector. Covering 20 types of financial entities – including banks, insurance firms, and ICT third-party service providers – DORA harmonises operational resilience rules to ensure that the sector can withstand severe operational disruptions.
DORA’s scope extends beyond mere protection. It highlights the need for consistent operational continuity and preparedness across financial institutions and their IT service providers. Key aspects of DORA compliance include:
- ICT risk management: DORA requires institutions to prepare comprehensive resilience testing programs for all digital operations.
- Incident reporting: This feature compels companies to report ICT incidents affecting operations to financial authorities and all affected parties.
- Third-party risk management: With this aspect, organisations must develop a regularly updated strategy for minimising third-party risk, including contractual agreements and monitoring.
- Information sharing: Entities operating in the financial sector must transparently share information about vulnerabilities and cyber threats.
Guarantee NIS 2 and DORA compliance with Salto smart solutions
Salto’s wide-ranging access control solutions secure environments from offices to data centers and critical infrastructure. As such, we’re uniquely positioned to help our clients and partners meet NIS 2 and DORA standards. Salto smart access and identity management solutions provide the following capabilities aligned with NIS 2 and DORA requirements to simplify the journey to compliance:
- Enhanced access control: Delivering advanced solutions for secure sensitive areas ensures that only authorised personnel gain entry. Organisations can restrict access to specific zones, define time-based schedules, and use various access methods, including smart cards and fobs, mobile access, keypads, and biometric authentication.
- Salto’s ID Visitor Management solution: This enhances access control systems for NIS 2 compliance, boosting security and accountability for all on-site visitors. Providing digital registration allows visitors to access authorised areas only, supported by features like real-time notifications and personalised visitor badges.
- Comprehensive audit trails: To meet NIS 2 and DORA requirements, organisations must maintain detailed records of access events. Our smart solutions automatically generate thorough logs and audit trails, giving your company a powerful tracking system that records who accessed specific doors and at what times. This reinforces compliance and accountability in the event of incidents.
- Resilient access control and state-of-the-art electronics locking solutions: Reflecting DORA’s emphasis on operational continuity, Salto’s intelligent access control solutions keep critical access points secure and functional, even during power outages or network failures. This reliability enables your organisation to maintain security seamlessly through unexpected disruptions.
- Multi-factor authentication (MFA): This technology provides an added layer of security by necessitating multiple verification steps beyond traditional passwords. Salto’s smart access solutions integrate MFA protocols into existing security systems, fortifying your organisations’ defenses against cyber threats.
- End-to-end authentication solutions: Ensure secure access to applications, networks, and access control management platforms and operators. Salto’s solutions deliver secure credentials on physical and mobile devices, guaranteeing seamless user authentication.
Get ready for NIS 2 and DORA: Securing tomorrow
Security is at the core of Salto’s operations. As one of the world’s leading access control providers, we embed privacy and safety into every aspect of our products and services. What is Salto KS Keychain?
Salto KS Keychain is a lite app and streamlined version of the Salto KS app designed to offer the primary functionality of Digital Key access. It is ideal for the everyday user who requires a fast, efficient, and easy-to-use solution to open doors with their smartphones. The app is significantly smaller than the Salto KS app due to the absence of administrative tools. As a result, Salto KS Keychain ensures quick downloads, minimal storage usage, and faster performance, making it ideal for users with limited device capacity or weaker internet connections. Just like the Salto KS Mobile App, the Salto KS Keychain app is for both iOS and Android and offers Digital Key for Apple Watch and Wear OS smartwatches.
The main difference between the Salto KS Keychain and the Salto KS Mobile App lies in their core functionalities. The KS Keychain app focuses exclusively on the Digital Key, designed for the simple and practical purpose of opening doors. In contrast, the Salto KS Mobile App offers comprehensive management capabilities, allowing you to oversee locks, events, and IQs. Salto KS Keychain is a streamlined, lightweight version of the Salto KS Mobile App, providing an effortless, straightforward experience opening doors.
The Salto KS Keychain app offers the following key features:

Digital Key and Salto KS Keychain
Now, you know that Digital Key is at the core of Salto KS Keychain. Are you new to the concept of Digital Key? Or do you already use Digital Keys but want to understand more about the technology and its benefits? The first thing you need to know is that Digital Key is the key that lives within your smartphone, giving you access in an easier way. Unlock doors by simply tapping the back of your phone against the lock. Aside from having a key that is just a tap away in your phone, Digital Key has the following benefits that can make all the difference.
- Replaces physical credentials: gone are the days of losing keys or handing them over.
- Simplifies operations: distributing and managing keys is easier than ever for operators who can quickly and remotely extend, edit or revoke access rights.
- Authenticates identity: smartphones are secured with a multi-factor identification system built into them (PIN, fingerprint, or facial recognition).
- Ensures security: data transfer and authentication between phones and locks are secured with SSL AES 128-bit encryption opening procedures.
Salto Bluetooth LE-enabled locks support Digital Key and as a result Bluetooth must be enabled on your device to communicate with the lock and open the door.
To use Digital Key, first make sure your Bluetooth is on. Next, tap on the Digital Key button or the widget. Now that the Digital Key is active, tap the back of your phone against the lock, and it will flash green with a sound to indicate that the door is successfully unlocked.
NFC opening for Android users
The Salto KS and Salto KS Keychain Mobile Apps are proud to introduce NFC technology for Digital Key, now available to Android users. Launching in beta, the NFC feature allows users to easily test the seamless door unlocking experience. The Salto KS Keychain app has NFC openings enabled by default to enhance user convenience further. Android users can tap their phones to the lock without opening their app or tapping on their widget, and the Digital Key will activate via NFC technology to unlock the door. An NFC opening saves even more time opening doors as you don’t need to open the app or swipe to find your widget.
If your Android phone is NFC-enabled, placing it within close proximity of the lock will trigger your device to activate your Digital Key and successfully open the door if you have access permissions.
NFC is also available for Wear OS smartwatches! To enable this feature, download the SALTO KS app on both your Wear OS watch and Android phone via the Google Play Store. You will be guided through setting up and activating the Digital Key on your watch. Once activated, you are ready to use Digital Key by simply placing your arm within short range of the lock for it to open instantly.
The Salto KS Keychain Digital Key Widget
The Salto KS Keychain app offers a Digital Key Widget that takes convenience to the next level. This customizable widget allows you to unlock doors effortlessly without opening the app. All that is required is to turn on your Bluetooth and unlock your phone.
Widgets give you quick and easy access to essential functions, and the Digital Key Widget is no exception. It’s the key that’s always within reach on your smartphone.
