In this particular, Google's MASA certification demonstrates our commitment to robust security practices in our mobile applications and a proactive strategy towards the security of our customers”
Ane Uncetabarrenechea
Chief Information Security Officer Salto Systems
What is MASA?
MASA is an industry-led collaboration to improve application security through third-party security assessments based on industry standards. Via the MASA program, Google recognizes mobile developers who have had their applications independently validated against a set of security best practices for the Android Platform. Salto has passed the review through a certified security laboratory specialised in pen testing called ‘Dekra’. This is done by cybersecurity experts who use the latest penetration testing methodologies to try to find the weakest spot in networks. By identifying weaknesses in an early stage, it is easier to alleviate future complications. The goal of passing these ‘pen-tests’ is to ensure safety in Google Play and the Android ecosystem and provide consumers with more transparency and an overall secure feeling when using the app.
“We are happy and proud that we have achieved the certification. Security is an important topic for us, and the certification is one of the many ways we validate that our security policies and development guidelines are implemented properly for our products”

Physical security and access control. Everything you need to know
Access control is a critical element of physical security. Here’s what you need to know.
Keyless entry systems have become increasingly popular for commercial and corporate buildings. From working, retail and banking spaces to industrial and manufacturing facilities, government and public sector installations, and airports and other transportation hubs – these systems have become a critical element of physical security.
Access control fast-tracks the digital transformation of these facilities, helping them become smarter, more secure, and more efficient. By replacing traditional metal keys with intelligent keyless systems and ID management solutions, users can access a building or office using smart credentials like mobile digital keys, PIN codes, or face recognition.
Physical vs keyless access control
A cohesive access control system goes a long way in securing your organisation. Whether you’re onboarding new employees, a new guest or handling temporary visitor requests, it offers a modern approach to secure access while optimising operations that address your business needs and today’s challenges.
However, the smart functionality of keyless access control systems provides many benefits for commercial, hospitality, educational facilities, residential, critical infrastructures or working spaces.
First and foremost, keyless entry is convenient, eliminating the hassle of carrying and tracking physical keys. Users and visitors can enter with a keycard or smartphone through smart digital identity credentials or facial recognition technology. What’s more, access permission can be easily terminated when staff, guests, residents, or visitors leave or credentials are lost or stolen. The administrative time spent issuing, retrieving, and managing mechanical keys is greatly reduced, improving overall user experience and boosting operational efficiency.
Just as importantly, keyless entry guarantees enhanced protection. Security doesn’t stop at the door – nor should your access control. Combining access control and digital technologies delivers solutions that protect your people and assets. No need to worry about lost or stolen keys, or unauthorised copies being made. Access rights can be granted and revoked instantly, giving system administrators complete control. Many keyless systems also provide audit trails showing who entered which door and when, boosting transparency and peace of mind for not just building owners and managers, but staff and visitors too.
With keyless physical access management protocols in place, system operators enjoy the flexibility of configuring access permissions as required. Physical access control can be managed around employees’ schedules, seniority, or access needs based on their hours or specific roles.
Alternatively, keyless systems can offer blanket security for restricted areas or calendar-related events; entry can be restricted to certain days or times, for example. With the right keyless solution, administrators can design custom access control procedures, ensuring total physical access control over the premises.
Physical security and access control: what you need to know
While the keys used for traditional keyed locks can be stolen or copied without authorisation, or simply lost or poorly organised, smart keyless entry systems have no such issues:
- Access rights are configured through an all-inclusive access management software.
- Operators can grant or revoke access rights instantly to ensure only current employees, authorised visitors, and service providers have access – and only to permitted areas and periods of time.
- Expand your reach with greater visibility to all areas of your building, delivering a level of security you never thought possible.
- Prevent unwanted access from former staff or uninvited guests, providing a clear, real-time picture of who is in the building and where at any given time.
Gone are the days of losing sleep over missing keys or unauthorised copies. Keyless entry delivers robust access control overall, with integration that lets businesses manage access permissions with precision. Access can even be traced back to a specific credential to identify who entered a restricted area and at what time. Such transparency greatly improves accountability and security.
Why is access control important in physical security?
Physical access control in a smart building ecosystem provides high-level convenience. Staff members simply use keycards, fobs, or mobile credentials via their mobile phones to enter the premises securely, prompting a record of their access to be generated.
Doors equipped with smart locking technology unlock automatically when valid credentials are presented. As a result, access is fast and secure for authorised users – and considerably more difficult for unauthorised visitors.
The absence of physical keys also means there are no limitations on the number of users who can be granted entry on any day or at any given time. This means that you can manage access and physical identities easily, 24/7. New users will receive their credentials quickly through centralised access control software. And if a user leaves the building or a visitor checks out, their credentials are revoked instantly without having to retrieve physical keys – saving time and bolstering security.
The convenience factor is a major benefit of keyless entry for commercial buildings and offices, but there are many others:
Cost savings
Implementing a keyless entry system can lead to significant cost savings for office, commercial, and public buildings.
One major area of savings comes from reducing the expenses associated with copying and replacing missing physical keys. This is a common issue in traditional mechanical systems and requires taking copies from master keys or getting replacement keys for individual employees. Some keys have higher security standards, making them particularly expensive to copy; most have to come directly from the original supplier. Administrative charges associated with tracking staff keys and managing the key distribution process make it even more prohibitive.
Additional cost savings come from automating the access control system, which strengthens security policies while improving the flow of people within your facility. In the event of a security breach, smart keyless entry systems allow access permissions to be reconfigured and updated remotely, rather than having building owners change locks and keys on multiple doors.
Installing keyless access also increases efficiency. Improved workflow processes mean spending less time on provisioning and managing user credentials and access rights. Compared to traditional lock-and-key setups, keyless systems effectively pay for themselves over time through cost savings and improved operational efficiency.
Improved security
Keyless entry systems provide immense security advantages over traditional keyed locks. Some of the main benefits include:
- Audit trails: The detailed audit trails created by most electronic security access control systems show who entered which doors and when. This ensures accountability and allows system controllers to investigate any security breaches. Widespread knowledge that the system logs all access attempts, successful or otherwise, also deters misconduct.
- Restricted access: With a keyless system, you can restrict access to certain areas and set time-based access schedules. For example, you could allow the cleaning or part-time staff to enter only during working hours.
- Less reliance on physical keys: Centralised control and access visibility is a significant security upgrade from traditional physical keys, which fail to provide the same level of security, accountability, and convenience.
Integration and smart building ecosystem
Unify access control with the rest of your security system and achieve operational efficiencies, along with a comprehensive view of your building.
Flexible system infrastructure
Whether you’re looking for an on-premise, cloud-based, or hybrid access control solution, there is a wide range of access control infrastructure and flexible deployment options to fit your needs.
Which access control should you choose?
When evaluating keyless entry systems, it's important to consider factors like a building’s layout, operational challenges, existing infrastructure such as the access or visitor management setup, and integration with other systems. Examining its security policies could be beneficial too, as is identifying new ways to improve the user experience. The holistic view will make it easier to take control of your access management and building safety.
Keyless physical access control systems for offices and commercial buildings typically utilise one of four main technologies: biometrics, keypads, smart cards/fobs, or mobile access.
Smart credentials or badges
Smart cards and fobs use proximity technology to grant access. When the card or fob is tapped or waved near a reader, it locks or unlocks doors instantly. While this option is secure and convenient, it shares some drawbacks of traditional keys as cards and fobs can be lost, stolen, or shared without permission.
Mobile access and digital keys
With mobile access systems, users unlock doors via an app on their smartphone or other mobile device. This provides both security and convenience, allowing dynamic access control and creating audit trails. However, it obligates visitors and staff to have their mobile device with them at all times when entering or moving around within access-controlled areas.
Facial Recognition
Facial recognition systems identify individuals by their unique physical characteristics. This user authentication method uses facial recognition technology to create individualized and trusted facial credentials based on distinctive facial traits. By eliminating the need for traditional physical keycards, users can effortlessly gain access; this cutting-edge technology streamlines the access process and enhances security by eliminating the risk of lost or stolen credentials.
Pin and keypad door entry systems
Keypads are one of the most common forms of access control today. Keypad entry systems require users to enter a unique code or PIN to unlock doors.
Most modern access control systems use a keypad either as an additional identification method access option alongside another security layer to the access control system or access point necessary functionalities and two-factor authentication (2FA).
Visitors and ID Management
Managing visitors in any building or security-critical environment is an essential access control task.
Traditionally, visitor management has been handled through paper forms or guestbooks. However, requiring sign-in at reception or a security control point is labour-intensive for staff and time-consuming for visitors and contractors alike. It only takes just a few minutes at a time, but this adds up considerably when large numbers of people move in and out of a building. It can also drastically impact performance, customer experience, and operational efficiency.
In today's fast-paced world, larger or high-traffic buildings can experience huge volumes of individual access incidents. Having a robust entrance management solution and an equally secure, highly functional identification process is essential. The right keyless system provides efficient, flexible, and secure visitor access, keeping people moving and buildings safe while ensuring the best user experience.
Enjoy keyless convenience
Keyless entry systems offer numerous benefits for offices and commercial buildings looking to upgrade their access control:
- Avoid expensive cabling with wire-free access control technology to secure any entry point.
- Eliminate mechanical keys and simplify operations with precise, automated access permissions.
- Increase visibility with 24/7 real-time monitoring and access control management.
- Balance security, convenience, and user experience by managing access to multiple sites on a powerful, all-in-one platform.
- An access control system can perfectly function independently, but using it in conjunction with other systems can elevate the safety, security, and building management processes to an entirely new level.
Salto’s industry-leading innovations offer a broad selection of smart solutions to suit different business needs and operational requirements, from access control to ID visitor management and facial recognition to mobile access and integration capabilities. With proper planning and implementation, and the right keyless entry system in place, operators can significantly improve safety, security, convenience, and efficiency for commercial buildings, public facilities, hotels, critical infrastructures, residential properties, and work spaces.

Enhancing security with improved incident notifications
Effective incident notification systems play a pivotal role in ensuring swift responses to potential security breaches, system malfunctions, and other critical even
In today's fast-paced and interconnected world, ensuring 24/7 security of physical spaces has never been more crucial. Effective incident notification systems play a pivotal role in ensuring swift responses to potential security breaches, system malfunctions, and other critical events.
Traditional incident notification systems often lead to information overload and significant delays in response. Operators and systems administrators manage access for facilities – changing access rights, creating new user profiles, and monitoring and securing sites – but at the same time, are bombarded with alerts, from minor issues such as low battery warnings to major security breaches. This not only overwhelms them but also increases the risk of critical alerts being missed. Additionally, the lack of flexibility and analysis in these systems means that security policies, anticipating actions, and preventing situations before they escalate into emergencies via lockdowns and push notifications of potential entry breaches might not effectively alert your response teams.
Whether it is an everyday situation or an emergency, being ready and aware is critical to ensuring you can quickly respond to whatever situations may arise. Having a comprehensive smart access control system and action plan that can be seamlessly activated ensures you respond fast and effectively to everyday incidents and emergency situations.
As the dynamics of building and facility management evolve, there is a need for more sophisticated incident notification systems to manage and optimize workflows to deliver a consistent incident response every time. Modern organizations and smart buildings require systems to advance digitization in their operations to offer rapid customization, delegate responsibilities effectively, and ensure that those responsible receive the information they need to act quickly.
Physical access control that meets modern needs
Smarter and more secure access control optimizes operations. It addresses building needs and a more secure approach to managing security and incident response. Salto KS and Homelok cloud-based smart access solutions, as well as Salto Space the pioneering SVN data-on-card access control platform, have answered these challenges by introducing significant enhancements to their incident notification systems.

- During development - for defect management, communications with buyers, settlement documents and welcome packs.
- To manage maintenance requests - residents can simply log a request, include photos and track progress, with no phone calls, no paperwork, no hassle. They can book times for tradesperson appointments and for essential compliance safety checks.
- To communicate with residents – if, for example, there’s a planned power outage, or lifts out of action, residents can all get a message via the app, rather than having to put notices through doors or in corridors.
- Some buildings run events - exercise classes, for example, or cooking demonstrations or wine tastings. The app can be used to advertise these events and for residents to make bookings and credit card payments and gain access.
- Operators can use the app to offer residents a ‘Buy, Swap, Sell’ marketplace, exclusive to the building.
- The app can be used by a concierge or a courier to notify residents that there is a parcel for them. There’s also an integration with parcel locker companies, so the app can be used to access the lockers to leave and collect packages.

Leverage the Power of Integration with Smart Access
Residents are experiencing the intuitive power of connecting smart technologies from a single interactive app. Combining the smart keyless access experience with BuildingLink improves access control and on-demand ease with mobile residents’ management on-the-go. Residents can now access common area locks including gyms, pools, lounges, and more.
Joe says, ‘The combined BuildingLink and Salto solution is one of the drawcards for our clients, and particularly for build-to-rent developments, which can include a gym, pool, residents’ lounge, cafés, rooftop, and barbecue areas, as well as community events.’
Cienna Varsity Ridge: Keyless Living
All resident interaction with the facilities and the operators is via the Salto/BuildingLink app, which has helped to create thriving communities.
The BuildingLink app, integrated with Salto, is a highlight of the resident experience at Cienna Varsity Ridge.
Benefits for developers, operators, and residents
BuildingLink develops property management software solutions to make community administration easy, while improving the living experience for residents. From communication, to streamlined work processes, to property automated management, BuildingLink covers it all within an easy to use platform.
Maintenance tracking, calendar management, facilities bookings and community-wide communication are all delivered from a single, easy-to-use portal.
For the Property Manager:
Apps like BuildingLink with Salto are helping to drive down building management costs for developers and operators. They can manage the building much more efficiently – with full visibility and audit trails, and without paperwork and time-consuming manual processes. There is also evidence that higher rents can be sustained, and tenants more readily attracted to buildings with smart management apps, and that tenants stay for longer.
For residents:
it’s all about lifestyle, convenience, security, and community. Residents feel good about where they live. They can interact with the building facilities, the operators and their neighbors, all through a single, simple app on their phone. It’s apartment living at its very best.’
By leveraging the integration between Salto’s smart access solution and BuildingLink, Build-to-Rent apartment developers can benefit from an advanced, flexible, and community-centric security, community, and building management system.

Announcing the new Salto KS subscription model
Salto KS: An all-new subscription and pricing plan entirely tailored to the cloud-based access experience.
With the start of a new year, we decided to take a further step forward with our cloud-based access control solution, Salto KS. Over the past decade, the evolution of Salto KS has seen new features, technology integrations, and key-free credentials. We have learned plenty about our valued customers' needs and listened to their feedback, which has led to this next step for Salto KS: An all-new subscription and pricing plan entirely tailored to the cloud-based access experience.
We are excited and proud to announce that, as of today, our users can navigate to the Subscription page in their Salto KS Web App and experience this new model. Read ahead to find out more about the new subscription plans, how this model works, and why it will provide you with more flexibility, value, and control than ever before.
The new Salto KS Subscription Plans
While we continue to cater to our customer's needs and provide them with the best-in-class quality of access control they deserve, our customers know their spaces and operations better. They should have the ability to customize their own experience.
For this reason, we are introducing a new subscription model to cater to various cost approaches and growth strategies surrounding Salto KS sites.
The new subscription plans are Salto KS Lite and Salto KS Pro. Each plan comes with its own set of features that correspond to a customer's needs. What's more, we are introducing Add-ons. Currently, the only Add-on is Pods, which can be used together with both the Lite and Pro packages. In the upcoming sections, we will explain the new subscription plan and possibilities in further detail.
Salto KS Lite
The Salto KS Lite package is designed to meet all your cloud-based access control requirements in a reliable and scalable package. This package has been designed for Salto KS users who want to cover all their essential needs, including:
- Smart access core functionalities
- Web & Mobile apps (native mobile access)
- Credentials (Tag, Digital Key, PIN, and Remote opening)
- Two-factor authentication & Social Login
- Export and import functionalities
- Check-in & Check-out
- Events Storage (maximum of 90 days)
With Salto KS Lite, users can manage their spaces effortlessly and leverage flexible and secure access control solutions for all industry applications. Lite subscription holders can enjoy complete control of all functions and features from the Salto KS Web App or use the Mobile App to track events, unlock doors remotely, block users on the go, and manage all doors and users in real-time from anywhere.
Salto KS Pro
The Salto KS Pro package offers all the cloud-based access control features of Salto KS Lite and, in addition, equips you with a set of exclusive features to create an all-around smart space.
Salto KS Pro is an all-encompassing access control experience with endless cloud-based integration possibilities. Pro is intended for users who want to optimize their Salto KS experience and achieve a completely smart space. This plan accounts for every step to create a seamless user journey for any industry application or facility.
For now, the Salto KS Pro Features available are all the Lite features plus:
-
NET.Lock
Our top-of-the-line locker management solution. Manage and open smart lockers via the Salto KS Web & Mobile App using Gantner's locker cloud platform.
-
Smart Tag Enrollment
Seamlessly assign tags to Salto KS users by scanning a Tag reader. Smart Tag Enrollment saves time and guarantees a smooth experience of assigning tag access, which is especially beneficial for check-in or onboarding purposes.

-
Events Streaming
Event Streaming for Salto KS is a service that exposes entries and incident endpoints, enabling real-time communication between servers and clients. This service allows you to monitor an event in near real-time without refreshing the page.
Shortly, we will add more Pro Features that will collectively create the smart and seamless Salto KS Pro experience.
Add-ons and Additional Seats
Since you are now getting acquainted with our new subscription model, we must introduce you to two new terms: Add-ons and Additional Seats. Once you know these two handy concepts and how they work, you will have full transparency and control over your Salto KS plan and its capabilities.
What is an Add-on?
An Add-on is an optional feature you can add to your subscription. Add-ons are available to both Salto KS Lite and Pro customers, which means that all Salto KS users can select an Add-on to accompany their existing list of features. Our first Add-on available is Pods.
A Pod is a collection of locks a user should have access to (e.g., the building entrance, the social area, and the front door of their apartment). With this feature in Salto KS, building managers can outsource the access control management to Pod Members, allowing them to invite guests to their Pod. This feature enables building managers to offload some of the responsibility of management operations and save time.
What are Additional Seats?
Additional Seats can expand the limitation of certain Salto KS Pro features beyond the subscription voucher size capacity. Users can customize their subscriptions by adding Additional Seats for certain Pro Features. NET.Lock, i.e., locker management, is an example. For instance, in the case of NET.Lock: All Pro subscription sizes will support up to 192 lockers, and if, for example, a customer requires 193 lockers, they will need to purchase that extra locker individually as an Additional Seat.
Please note that Additional Seats will work differently depending on the Pro Feature. This is because each feature has a different component that can be purchased in addition to the maximum supported by the subscription. For NET.Lock: the component is lockers.
An updated pricing model and its benefits
In the former Salto KS subscription model, all voucher types included the same functionalities and were only differentiated by the number of users and IQs. Having an IQ-based subscription was not beneficial to users who wished to scale up their business. Now, we have updated our pricing model to improve our features' sales process and accommodate our subscription model to our customers' needs.
We have shifted to a feature-based subscription model which will help customers equip their sites with the right bundle of features that best fits their needs. This new voucher structure comprises two feature-oriented packages, Lite and Pro, which will be sold alongside the existing user-based Salto KS vouchers.
The process of purchasing a voucher is the same, i.e., you must contact your supplier/installer or Salto Systems Support to buy a new voucher. The only difference is that you now have the freedom to select the Salto KS subscription plan of your choice and customize it with Add-ons and Additional Seats.
A ‘Free Week’ for every new installation
When a new installation (site) is created, Salto KS customers receive a Free Week. In this Free Week, they will have access to seven full days of Salto KS Pro features and Pods as an Add-on before choosing their subscription.
If you try out the Free Week and want to continue using its features, make sure you have purchased and activated a Pro plan or selected the number of Pods you wish to add on top of your subscription.
If after the seven days are up, you wish to activate a Salto KS Lite subscription, please note that while you will be able to view what you created during your Free Week, it won't be possible to click on and utilize Pro features or Add-ons (Pods). These will be disabled at the end of your Free Week.
The next steps
So, what does all of this mean for you? We have implemented steps to smooth this transition, especially keeping our loyal existing customers in mind. All customers with an active subscription will be upgraded to Salto KS Pro until the end of 2024.
As we continue to grow and push the boundaries of cloud-based access control, we assure you of the highest quality and security of our solutions. Our team will do our best to ease the impact of these changes on our customers and partners, and we thank you for your continued support.
More information is on the way. In the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact our Support team with any questions or for assistance with the new subscriptions and prices.
Robust capability and customization: The integration between Foxbox Digital, The X Company and SALTO KS
Foxbox Digital has integrated with the SALTO KS API to accommodate our joint end customer, The X Company.
Foxbox Digital has integrated with the SALTO KS API to accommodate our joint end customer, The X Company: A rapidly expanding multifamily residential community with over 5,000 units and $1 Billion in construction activity.
The X Company has two of the most significant SALTO KS installations (and will expand to a total of six buildings in the US).
We’ve asked Foxbox Digital some questions to find out what this interesting integration exactly entails and what it means for the Foxbox Digital and the X Company:
What exactly is Foxbox Digital, what do you guys offer, and to whom?
“Foxbox Digital is an award-winning digital product agency headquartered in Chicago. We partner with startups and SMBs to design, develop, and deliver successful digital experiences across mobile and web. Foxbox is ranked #121 on the 2022 Inc 5000 and is the 11th fastest-growing software company in the US.”
Through the technology we create, we help customers automate their back-office operations and drive more revenue through customer engagement.
Can you explain why you decided to collaborate with SALTO KS for the X Company?
“Delivering reliability and security to residents meant The X Company needed technology that succeeded where previous tools had fallen short. SALTO KS provided the perfect combination of robust capability and customization for the type of custom integration the challenge required.”
How does the integration with SALTO KS help the X company's tenants and building managers?
“Both residents and community managers are able to not only remotely access personal apartment locks but also access other amenities in the same seamless experience.”
How did this integration with SALTO KS change the business for Foxbox Digital and the X Company?
“The X Company needed a platform that delivered on its disruptive vision for the multifamily residential real estate industry. The SALTO KS integration played a critical role in giving them all the tools they needed to support residents and expand their reach.”
How does Foxbox Digital help companies to scale?
“Foxbox Digital helps companies scale by designing and building world-class digital products and successfully bringing them to market. Through the technology we create, we help customers automate their back-office operations and drive more revenue through customer engagement.”
Naturally, innovative technology had to play a crucial role. Now, residents can seamlessly grant access to a visiting friend, book a conference room, and alert community managers of a dishwasher that needs fixing.
What is the most requested feature you ever received?
“X Company has a modern vision for their living spaces in which the "roommates" may not always know each other before living at X but instead are paired up by the X team. This is part of their vision to create a more social community where people can move from all over the globe and meet new people.
SALTO KS locks are used on all room- and individual-bedroom doors because they provide an added layer of safety and security, especially since the roommates might not know each other initially and need time to build trust.
However, we saw an overwhelming interest in being able to set bedroom doors to a default unlocked state where they would not lock every time they were closed. This would allow residents to navigate into their bedrooms more easily and not need to unlock them whenever they needed to get in. This was supported with the "Remote Office Mode" feature in SALTO KS, allowing people to set a lock to a default unlocked state.”
Can you give a few examples of the X Company's ‘modern coworking options’ and how Foxbox Digital has helped them to offer these?
“The X Company’s core value proposition is based on a hybrid live-work-play experience built on state-of-the-art spaces and amenities. Naturally, innovative technology had to play a crucial role. Now all within one platform, residents can seamlessly grant access to a visiting friend, book a conference room, and alert community managers of a dishwasher that needs fixing. Plus, with a real-time analytics dashboard, community managers and leadership at The X Company can analyze and improve the resident experience in real-time.”
What ‘problem’ or challenge did SALTO KS solve for Foxbox Digital and the X Company?
“The integration with SALTO KS allowed us to ensure the platform's digital lock capabilities provided the most secure, easy-to-use, and reliable resident experience possible.”
What would you like to see for SALTO KS to support Foxbox Digital’s plans in the future?
“Foxbox aims to be SALTO KS’ go-to integration partner. We have the experience and expertise to develop custom digital products using SALTO KS. We help commercial real estate, multi-family residential, and hospitality clients deliver modern digital access experiences using SALTO KS.”
Three of the biggest benefits of the integration with SALTO KS:
1. Mobile/Keyless entry that works online and offline. The X Company App allows residents to access every door from their bedroom to the garage and shared spaces. It even works when users aren’t connected to the internet.
2. Grant and revoke resident access in an instant, securely. The X Company platform is secured by multi-factor authentication, with additional back-end security protection that protects residents when they lose phone access.
3. Sharing visitor access. The app can grant temporary and secure access to friends, family, dog walkers, and more from within the app.
