The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Pod, Site, and Events
Our cloud-based access solution, SALTO KS, has just released its latest series of improvements to the SALTO KS Web App.
Our cloud-based access solution, SALTO KS, has just released its latest series of improvements to the SALTO KS Web App. The Pod, Site, and Events pages will look a bit different, but they are guaranteed to impact your productivity and experience! Like previous updates to our platform, the new layouts provide a cleaner and more organized display of your actions and data.
If you haven’t read our recent update, we started a project to align our SALTO KS platforms regarding user experience, style, and consistency. Our first improvements were made to the People, Locks, and Access Groups pages. Now, in this blog post, we will show you what’s new in the Pod, Site, and Events sections of your Web App and all you need to know about the new look. Read ahead for a bird’s eye view of before and after!
Pods section of SALTO KS
The new Pods pages of your Web App follow a similar style and structure to the People, Locks, and Access Groups pages. The ‘Members’ table has a more straightforward layout and is better structured with information about Pod Members and Pod Guests. This table also contains a new ‘Tags’ column to view how many tags are used from the ones available.
The main actions are in the Actions Header on the top of the page, where you have the option to Edit Pod, Add New Members, and Delete. When you click ‘Edit Pod,’ you will find the option to ‘Clean’ the Pod.
Once you click on a Pod, the menu options for the page are now presented in the form of four tabs (or chips) that you can select: Members, Locks, Tags, and Time frame.
The Locks and Tags tabs have a similar overview to the Access Groups page. When you select locks in the Pod, they will be highlighted in red to show you are removing them, and when you select locks not in the Pod, they will be highlighted in green to show you are adding them. This process works in the same way for tags in the Tags tab. Once you have made your selections, you can click the ‘Save Changes’ blue button below, and you’re good to go.
SALTO KS page site
1. Site Overview Page
The Site Overview page has mostly had a makeover regarding its presentation of your Site’s significant information.
The changes for this page follow a similar structure to the previous page upgrades, including the following:
a.) A top navigation bar with two buttons: Edit Site and Transfer Ownership
b.) Cards containing all the essential information concerning the ‘Site details’ and ‘Site owner.’
c.) Mobile compatibility, with expandable cards that are easily readable on your mobile browser.
As you might have noticed, the ‘Transfer Ownership’ button has moved to the top navigation bar. Overall, this page has a cleaner look and feel, with the content sitting neatly on your screen.
2. Site Hardware Page
The Site Hardware page is the most significant upgrade in user experience. You will notice that this page has a visibly different layout than before, with a new and distinct hardware table.
Like before, your detached locks and repeaters will be presented in sections with a drop-down menu for actions to the side. The page has all the same information as the old design, with only a few changes, which include:
a.) The search bar for IQs has been moved to directly above the hardware table on the left.
b.) The rows of the hardware table have indicated headers that were not present before. These are ‘Device Name,’ ‘Type,’ and ‘Connected To’.
c.) The table has been improved with better alignment, and the IQ tree has more clarity and organization.
d.) The lock icons are more realistic, making deciphering the IQ tree and utilizing the action menu easier.
e.) The status and Mac number have been made immediately visible.
3. Lockers (GANTNER NET.Lock)
The Lockers page has a new name: 'NET.Lock' — i.e., lockers from GANTNER - a SALTO Group Company. This page has a cleaner layout and improved icons, similar to the Hardware page.
The locker mode and status are now grouped within the table's first ‘Name’ column.
4. Tags
In the Tags page table, you will notice that the Offline Access icon is now visible in the ‘Tag Number’ column, so you can see which tags have Offline Access enabled. When a tag is blocked, this icon is red, and when a tag is unblocked, the icon is blue.
In addition, a new column, ‘Pods,’ shows whether or not a tag belongs to a Pod.
Lastly, the Tags table has an actions menu on the far right of the row with 3 new actions: Disable Offline Access, Delete tag, and Block tag. You can Enable Offline Access or Unblock the tag depending on the status.
5. Rights, Installer Access, Floors, and Tag Reader
These pages are similar to the stylistic changes explained above. The most visible updates are the addition of a toggle switch button and that all main actions are in the Actions Header on the top of the page; for instance, in the Installer Access page, the ‘Revoke Access’ button is now in the header.
Events Events pages of SALTO KS
The Events pages include Entries and Incidents. These pages have an updated layout with the exact same content.
That concludes our overview of the latest pages updated in your SALTO KS Web App. We hope the changes improve your experience in the app and increase your efficiency and performance of operations.
Like with all our updates, we have kept you, our valued user, in mind and made all these mobile-compatible changes. With this, we come closer to our goal of aligning our platforms regarding user experience, style, and consistency.

The Improved SALTO KS Web App: Locks, People & Access Groups
Introducing a new look for the Dashboard page on the Web App.
With our smart access solution, SALTO KS, we’re committed to providing you with the best experience by offering cutting-edge cloud-based technology that makes access seamless, keyless, and wireless. In doing so, we recently set out on a project to align our platforms regarding user experience, style, and consistency. Our efforts are intended to make your time on our app more productive and designed to facilitate your access management with immediate control of your most-needed tasks and operations. This blog post will walk you through improvements to the SALTO KS Web App, including what you can expect, what is changing, and how it will elevate your user journey.
In June, we released the first update, introducing a new look for the Dashboard page on the Web App. While there were no major changes to the dashboard, a few important and notable updates to the Web App layout will improve the overall user experience. The most important and notable updates were the following:
- Switch sites: You can switch between your sites in the bar at the top of your screen, with reports, notifications, and profile icons to the right of the bar.
- Sidebar: The top navigation bar has been replaced with a sidebar to the left of your screen with all the same menu options.
- Real-time events: The ‘Latest Entries’ overview of your dashboard now provides you with real-time updates, loading the latest events as they happen; no need to refresh the page.
For the next step, we are releasing new and improved People, Locks, and Access Groups pages in the SALTO KS Web App. This is part of a series of upgrades in the upcoming months to align the style of our apps and improve your user experience.
All three pages follow a similar style: they have a sidebar navigation and a more straightforward format, with headings or buttons having better visibility.
These updates will be made available to all SALTO KS users next week. Read through what you can expect to see below, but don't worry; we'll also walk you through what's new in the app itself when it is released.
People Page
The top navigation bar of the People page now has two buttons: ‘Create User’ and ‘Invite.’ This makes it easier and more intuitive for admins to add new users to the People page. The top bar still details how many people are listed on the site, and a search bar to look for a specific user or tag.
The ‘Access Status’ and ‘Subscription’ columns are now controllable via toggle switches and color-coded to red when you block a user or unsubscribe, respectively.
When you select a specific user, you arrive at the user’s details page. Here, you will see an ‘Actions’ button with a dropdown of the quick and instant actions you can perform regarding that user: Reset IQ PIN (based on your permissions), Block user, and Delete user.
You will also find a card on your screen with all the user’s information. The menu options for this page are now presented in the form of four tabs (or chips) that you can select: Keys, Entries, Lock Options, and Access Groups.
Locks Page
The locks page has also been given a makeover, making it easier to sort through your site’s locks and their corresponding data.
Like the People page, you can search for a specific lock, and upon selecting a lock, you will be taken to the lock details page. On this page, you will find a card with all the lock’s information. This information was previously accessible in the sidebar menu under ‘Details’, but now you can skip this step and access the information straight away. This card is expandable to provide you with a comprehensive list of all you need to know about that particular lock without navigating back to the overview.
What was formerly the sidebar menu is now three tabs above the page, which are ‘Entries,’ ‘Access Groups’, and ‘Settings.’
Access Groups Page
The Access Groups page has also been improved. On the main screen, you will find the button ‘Add Access Group’ on the top navigation bar. When you click on an access group, you will see that this screen looks different, with the previous sidebar navigation now being replaced with the same tabs sitting above the table: ‘People,’ ‘Locks,’ and ‘Timeframes.’
When you select People or Locks, the user’s avatars and lock icons are slightly larger and more detailed; the lock icons even correspond to the exact type of hardware.
The biggest update is when you remove or add a user or a lock. When you select the users or locks, they will be highlighted in red to indicate you are removing them and green to indicate that they are being added. When you’re done, you must simply select the blue ‘Save Changes’ button below the table, and you’re all set!
Coming Soon: Filters Update
When you arrive on the user details page of the People page and the locks details page of the Locks page, you will find the ‘Filters’ tool. This allows you to set filters and search based on the criteria you find most suitable to get the information you’re looking for. For now, filters on these pages will work in the same way, but we are working on an update to improve this tool, which we plan to share with you in the near future.
This is what you can expect the update to look like.
In the People page, when you are on a user’s details page and select the Entries tabs, you will see the button for ‘Filters.’ However, unlike before, you will navigate to the sidebar filter, where you can select or create custom filters. This means you will be able to save certain criteria and use these custom filters whenever you want to access that specific information.
Similarly, on the Locks page, when you view a specific lock’s details and select the ‘Entries’ tab, you will be able to access the sidebar filter. Once you save a custom filter, you’ll be able to access it at any time and also have the option to rename or remove it. Last but not least, you will also be able to use the filters tool on your mobile browser, which will be fully functional and compatible with your smartphone.
We will notify you when this tool is available and remind you how to save these filters.
Mobile Compatibility
We have noticed an uptake in mobile activity among our users, and we understand that access control management is a full-time job, sometimes on the go.
This is why we decided to renovate the mobile compatibility of our Web App, making it possible for you to use your mobile browser to take care of all the needs of your site. After a re-design by our talented UX team and extensive mobile compatibility testing, we are proud to present you with a fully functional mobile experience of the SALTO KS Web App, even without using the Mobile App. For now, this mobile compatibility is only available for the new pages we have introduced, i.e., Locks, People, and Access Groups. In the future, you will have this experience for all pages of your Web App.
In any browser of your choice, you can access the new People and Locks page with a clear overview and complete control of managing your users and hardware.
Our Vision
As we continue to grow and evolve our solution, a vital part of this is to improve your user experience. Our vision is to make your access control journey seamless, starting from the screens you interact with daily. The platform alignment process of improving our design will continue over the next few quarters, and we will do our best to walk you through these changes and ensure you take advantage of all the upgrades. Enjoy the new experience, and keep an eye out for more improvements around the corner!

Local X SALTO: Building Sustainable Communities
Local, a Melbourne-born Build to Rent business and SALTO are creating a closed-loop lifecycle for spent batteries within Local’s communities.
Local, a Melbourne-born Build to Rent business and SALTO are creating a closed-loop lifecycle for spent batteries within Local’s communities.
In today's world, the importance of sustainability cannot be overstated. Buildings and properties across various industries are taking bold steps to minimize their carbon footprint and impact in cities and promote responsible practices. In line with this commitment, Melbourne-born Build to Rent business, Local, and SALTO, have joined forces to create a closed-loop lifecycle for spent batteries within Local's communities. This partnership aims to tackle the issue of battery waste through responsible recycling practices. Let's explore how Local and SALTO are building sustainable communities together.
SALTO becomes B-cycle accredited battery steward.
SALTO Oceania is now a proud B-cycle Accredited Battery Steward via the government-approved Battery Stewardship Council’s (BSC) B-cycle Scheme. SALTO pays a voluntary levy on the lock batteries it imports into the country to fund the B-cycle scheme.
As part of their joint commitment, SALTO and Local have partnered with Ecobatt, a BSC-endorsed battery recycling company based in Melbourne, to set up recycling receptacles at Local’s flagship apartment project in Kensington, to ensure that all the spent batteries within its community, including those from SALTO smart locks, are recycled responsibly.
Commitment to environmental properties and Net Zero operations.
SALTO and Local are deeply committed to creating sustainable living spaces that prioritize the environment. The buildings are set up to operate at net zero, meaning they strive to produce minimal waste, maximize renewable energy utilization, and improve the overall connection, comfort, and quality of the community.
“Every element of a Local project is designed with the environment in mind to improve the connection, comfort, and quality of the community in and around it,” said Dan McLennan, Local Co-Founder and Co CEO. “Our buildings are set up to operate at net zero. They will be fully electric and will utilise maximum renewable energy while producing minimal waste, so ensuring that SALTO could guarantee that our on-premises batteries were going to be recycled was a non-negotiable for us.”
By providing Ecobatt recycling receptacles at Local Kensington, Local, and SALTO are ensuring that all of the community’s batteries, including those within its smart access control system, can be recycled in the most environmentally responsible way possible at Ecobatt’s state-of-the-art facilities in Campbellfield.
"At SALTO, we too are 100 percent committed to sustainability and reducing our impact on the environment," said Cedric Duigou, SALTO APAC Living Spaces Lead. "When Local approached us to explore the recycling of our lock batteries, we were excited to implement this initiative together.”
Creating a closed-loop lifecycle for responsible battery recycling.
To extend the initiative beyond its residents, Local will grant the general public access to Ecobatt receptacles placed in the staffed lobby, along with communication and education programs, to encourage wider community involvement in the scheme.
Lithium Australia stated that more than six million kilograms of alkaline batteries are consumed nationally each year. In 2019, the BSC estimated that, at the end of their useful life, 97 percent of those batteries were disposed of in municipal waste streams and reported to landfill.
Since its inception in January 2022, however, the B-cycle Scheme has collected and recycled over three million kilograms of spent batteries.
SALTO is committed to providing clients, like Local, with the highest level of security and convenience while also taking steps to reduce its impacts on the environment.

Introducing SALTO KS’ Locker Integration with GANTNER’s NET.Lock
In our efforts to provide our users with a smart access experience, SALTO KS has integrated with NET.Lock from GANTNER - a SALTO Group Company. By utilizing GANTNER’s locker cloud platform, you can now manage and open smart lockers in your SALTO KS Web and Mobile App.
In our efforts to provide our users with a smart access experience, Salto KS has integrated with NET.Lock from GANTNER - SALTO WECOSYSTEM Brand. By utilizing Gantner’s locker cloud platform, you can now manage and open smart lockers in your SALTO KS Web and Mobile App.
Gantner’s locker cloud platform offers an innovative software solution for all those who want a centrally-powered smart locker system without having to set up the corresponding IT infrastructure, such as a server or cloud connection.
Across any industry, locker management can transform the operations of your business, ensuring satisfied customers with guaranteed security and safety. This integration is a joint effort between SALTO WECOSYSTEM Companies, offering a new set of possibilities for both platforms to benefit from each other’s strengths. Users will be able to unlock Gantner locker locks in two different ways: either via Remote Opening from their Salto KS Mobile App or with a Salto smart tag. The best of access control, now leveraging the most modern locker solution.
In the latest Salto KS Mobile App release, version 8.10, we have introduced two functionalities to locker management: Personal Mode and Dynamic Mode. Read ahead as we walk you through both so that you have all the information you need to transform your locker management and assure your customers leave not just satisfied but happy!
Locker Management Modes
Depending on the needs of your business, you can accordingly switch between Personal Mode and Dynamic Mode to cater to your members in the best possible way. Site Admins can manage access to lockers seamlessly from within the Web App, as they always have with other types of locks. The only difference is that there will now be a dedicated, standalone page for managing the lockers.
This integration offers an Audit Trail, where users can see their access history regarding locker openings, the same way they do with other Salto smart locks. Site Admins can do the same in the Salto KS Web App for all users. This will also help to understand and monitor the behavior in locker use to make a selection between the modes. The modes are as follows:
- Personal Mode
A user needs to be assigned to a locker to occupy it. This can be done by Site Admins.
Multiple users can be assigned to the same locker. The locker will only be available to the assigned user(s), who can lock/open it as many times as they want.
It will only be free for use again when unassigned from the previous user(s).
- Dynamic Mode
In Dynamic Mode, a user can occupy any available locker at a given moment. The locker will then only be accessible to that user, who can lock/open it as many times as they want.
It will only be available again when it is released from the previous user. This can be done by the users themselves via the Mobile App, and Site Admins can make use of the Web App to release the locker as well.
A closer look at how Dynamic Mode works
Users can operate and use the lockers via the Salto KS Mobile App. This feature is available for both iOS and Android. In the ‘Locks’ section of the Mobile App, users will be able to see the separate tab ‘Lockers’ if the integration is enabled on their site. Here, they can view the status of lockers as either ‘Closed,’ ‘Open,’ or ‘Locked.’ Open indicates that the locker is physically open, and Closed means that the locker is physically closed but not locked.
In order to occupy a locker set in Dynamic Mode, a user must select an available locker from the options displayed and then click the button ‘Lock Remotely.’ Depending on the locker settings, this button might be ‘Open Remotely.’
Once this button is clicked, the locker will be assigned to the user, and they will be able to open and lock it again as many times as they wish. No one else will be able to use the locker while it is assigned to the user.
In Dynamic Mode, once the locker has been assigned to a user, the user will then have the option to ‘Open Remotely’ in order to open and access the locker as many times as they wish.
The user will also have the option of ‘Open and Release.’ To “release the locker” means to unassign the locker so that it becomes available for use. For the locker to be released, either the user unassigns it themselves by selecting this button, or it can be unassigned by a Site Admin on the Salto KS Web App. Once the locker has been released, it is vacant and ready again for use.

We look forward to transforming the user experience of lockers as we know it and elevating the facilities offered across various industries to be secure and reliable.
Revolutionizing Senior Care Technology: The role of electronic access control systems
In the past decade, Senior Living communities have undergone a profound transformation, driven by advances in technology.
In the past decade, Senior Living communities have undergone a profound transformation, driven by advances in technology. These developments are enhancing the quality of life for residents, improving staff efficiency, and providing peace of mind for families.
One area significantly impacted by this digital transformation has been the adoption of modern electronic access control systems. Far from merely controlling who can enter or exit a building, these systems act as multifunctional facility management tools that streamline operations, bolster security, and ensure compliance. Today’s access control platforms are creating safer, more efficient living and working environments, ultimately revolutionizing the way senior living communities function.
The Resident and Staff experience with smart locks
One of the most compelling advantages of modern smart access control solutions is their ability to significantly enhance the experience of both residents and staff in senior living communities. The replacement of physical keys with smart credentials—fobs, key cards, PIN code access, or even smartphone digital keys—relieves residents from the worry of lost, stolen or misplaced keys and removes the burden from the staff of managing or replacing them.
These systems represent a substantial leap forward in operational efficiency. With electronic access control systems, every interaction a staff member has with a resident's living quarters is automatically logged. This eliminates the need for time-consuming, manual record-keeping. The time they save can then be redirected towards more meaningful interactions with residents, enhancing the quality of care provided.
Improve your staff experience and simplify your senior living facilities' security access control. Empower employees with convenient, smart key access to the locations they need. Add or revoke authorizations in real-time. Support long-serving or high-value staff, enjoy the flexibility to grant individual access privileges to share living space, resident rooms, back offices, etc., with digital keys or smart credentials giving employees the peace of mind and confidence of working in environments protected with robust security during and after business hours.
Moreover, this transparent record-keeping system offers reassurance to families about the regularity and quality of care their loved ones are receiving. It also eliminates any ambiguity about staff-resident interactions, fostering a trust-based relationship between the staff, residents, and their families.
Senior housing technology: Enhanced security, compliance, and privacy
Advanced access control systems aren't just about convenience and operational efficiency; they also play a pivotal role in safeguarding the residents, property and assets, and critical resources within senior living communities. By setting user permissions, these systems can limit access to sensitive areas like medication storage or patient records to authorized personnel only. This added layer of protection significantly enhances the overall security within the community.
The digital nature of these systems is also instrumental in ensuring stringent compliance with regulations. They offer a secure, auditable means of accessing resident records, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). This not only aids in a facility operator’s ability to show proof of compliance with regard to confidentiality and privacy protections but also significantly reduces liability. These benefits provide reassurance to both the residents and their loved ones.
Audit trails and location tracking: Tools for personalized care
Beyond bolstering security and compliance, modern access control systems can also provide a comprehensive audit of where residents have gone within the community. Whether it's a trip to the pool, a visit to the cafeteria, or time spent in other communal areas, these systems can track and record residents' movements.
This feature serves as a valuable tool for understanding residents' habits, preferences, and routines. Such insights can help staff to tailor care plans and activities according to individual resident preferences, enhancing the overall resident experience. It also allows staff to quickly locate residents in case of emergencies, further enhancing safety within the senior living community.
Addressing liability tactfully and effectively
While discussing the multifaceted benefits of electronic access control systems, it's essential to tactfully address the issue of liability mitigation. These systems do more than offer security and ensure regulatory compliance; they offer a transparent, verifiable record of staff interactions with residents, resident interactions with other residents, access to medications, and resident movements throughout a property or facility.
Access control systems are an essential part of any senior living property operations and security. They allow you to keep track of who is coming into your building, where they're going, and how long they have been inside. This can help ensure that unauthorized people cannot gain access to sensitive areas of your facility.
This robust documentation and reporting capability can prove invaluable in addressing any potential disputes or concerns. By reducing potential ambiguity or he-said-she-said scenarios and always being armed with clear evidence through the audit trail, an operator can feel confident they are limiting potential liabilities while also providing the highest level of care for residents.
Unlocking the future and beyond
Modern electronic access control systems are revolutionizing senior living communities. We are on the brink of the largest senior population boom in our history—and with it, the demands that it will create for these communities and care facilities. It may be serendipity, fortuitousness, or, perhaps plain coincidence, but innovations in access control technology are reshaping how we live, work, and interact with our physical spaces at the time we need it most.
While primarily designed for safety and security, these systems offer far more than just locked doors. By eliminating traditional keys, automating record-keeping, and offering a secure and auditable means of accessing sensitive areas, assets and information, this technology is shaping a new age in senior care. They are complex data and facility management tools that will streamline operations and administration, enhance the resident and staff experiences, and provide crucial peace of mind for families.
The future state of senior living lies in leveraging new technologies and rethinking how we live and work in these environments, always focusing on the ultimate goal—enhancing the lives of residents.

Take the security of your access control operations to the next level by enabling two-factor authentication
Two-factor authentication (2FA), or multi-factor authentication (MFA), can be used as an added layer of security for your account on top of your username and password.
As technology advances, so does the risk of potential crime or fraud. Luckily, we can leverage technology to prevent this exposure and provide ourselves a more secure experience in our daily digital activities.
The standard practice of login credentials in the form of usernames and passwords can make it easy for criminals to invade your privacy, steal this information and gain access to personal accounts. This is where two-factor authentication comes in – it offers an added layer of security, protecting us from unauthorised access.
Two-factor authentication (2FA), or multi-factor authentication (MFA), can be used as an added layer of security for your account on top of your username and password. When 2FA is enabled, your account has extra protection should your credentials or device ever be compromised. A user’s identity is verified through a combination of two separate components,or factors, to confirm their authenticity. The first factor is the set of credentials used to log in to your account, while the second can take the form of a code sent to a device or portal to which you have access.
Without access to this second factor – typically a personal device – the hacker or cyber criminal cannot enter your account.
SALTO Systems regards your security as our highest priority. That’s why we offer two-factor authentication across all our smart access platforms, giving you the opportunity to enable a more secure experience for your daily building operations. Read on to learn how to use this feature and enable it on your SALTO KS and SALTO Space account!
SALTO KS - Cloud-based smart access platform
How to enable and use 2FA as a SALTO KS user
Step 1: To enable 2FA, sign in to your SALTO KS account and navigate to the Profile page. Here, click on ‘Manage Profile and Settings’ beneath Profile Information.
Step 2: From there, scroll down to your ‘Security & Services’ section, where you can choose to either have two-factor authentication ‘Enabled’ or ‘Disabled’.
Step 3: After you have enabled 2FA, you’ll be required to enter your password again for security purposes. You will then need to select your 2FA method of choice – whether that’s an authenticator app, SMS or email.
Step 4: Once you sign in, you’ll be asked for a verification code, that is, the second factor. Depending on the 2FA method you have enabled, you must provide this code by using your authenticator app or checking messages for the verification code sent to you via SMS or email.
Step 5: In the event you’re unable to log in using one of the authentication methods you’ve configured, you can use the Recovery Code. This is generated for you when enabling your 2FA method.
SALTO Space - Smart standalone, virtually networked access control platform
How to enable and use 2FA as a SALTO Space user
Two-factor authentication is an extra layer of security used to ensure that people trying to gain access to an online account are who they say they are. First, a user will enter their username and password. Then, instead of immediately gaining access, they will need to provide the code sent to their personal device via an authenticator app.
To get started, a user must download and install a free 2FA app like Google Authenticator, Authy, or Microsoft Authenticator on their smartphone or desktop. At login, the user first enters a username and password and then, when prompted, inputs the code shown on the app. This code is only valid for a minute.
Step 1: Press ‘TURN ON’ two-factor authentication. It will display the following screen:
Step 2: Follow the steps provided, enter the authentication code, and press ‘TURN ON’
Step 3: The operator will then activate 2FA (two-factor authentication).

Future-proof retail store access control management solutions
Modern access control solutions are essential for retail stores that want to future-proof their access control management.
Retail stores require efficient and secure access control solutions to ensure the safety of their customers, staff, and merchandise. Traditional access control methods such as keys, locks, and access cards are no longer sufficient to meet the evolving needs of modern retail environments. Robust access control is vital for efficient, successful retail store security of any size or type – boutiques or big-box stores, owner-operated restaurants or fast-food chains, banks or financial services outlets, and more.
With the emergence of new technologies and the growing importance of keyless smart access, retail store access control management solutions must be future-proof to adapt to the changing needs.
What's the future of access control?
The future of access control is increasingly digital, mobile, and connected. As technology continues to evolve, future-proof retail access control is about providing a more seamless, keyless, secure, and flexible experience for staff while also offering more sophisticated tools and analytics for store managers. An increasing number of access control systems are moving away from traditional physical keys and keycards towards smart mobile credentials.
Access control systems will continue to evolve to meet the dynamic needs of retail stores and other businesses – and SALTO is leading the charge toward this innovation, accelerating the smart access transition from mechanical keys to digital keys.
What are the challenges of traditional access control methods in retail?
Traditional access control methods such as keys and locks have been used for decades in retail stores: however, they come with several challenges. For example, it can be difficult to manage access control for large retail stores that have many employees and frequent turnover. Moreover, traditional access control methods lack the flexibility and convenience that modern retail environments require, from the store's main entrance to the back-store area and warehouse access.
Store managers must be freed from constant cries of, “Can I have the keys?” On the other hand, site managers must facilitate maintenance and deliveries, often outside of regular operating hours. Business owners must control stock and protect against fraud while landlords must ensure that only authorised personnel are on their premises.
These issues, and more, are easily managed with SALTO’s keyless smart access solutions for retail store security. SALTO Systems makes access control simple, seamless, and secure by providing you with the tools to grant specific access rights to your staff, suppliers, customers, or even delivery services.

Which are the best access control systems for businesses? SALTO Systems will help you find the answer!
This is not an easy question to answer, but SALTO Systems’ product and service offerings certainly stand out.
Modern-day access control systems utilise electronic components to deliver a seamless keyless experience. Users and guests can enjoy an efficient, secure, and flexible solution that regulates who has access to different areas within your building or facility. The ability to monitor who enters and leaves the premises, and when, helps keep your business and property safe; it also lends a streamlined and professional feel to your operations.
The best door access control systems offer building operators greater functionality, flexibility, and oversight. They allow you to:
- Boost security by allowing only authorised users and visitors into certain parts of your building or facility. This reduces the chance of people accessing areas they do not hold credentials for – whether maliciously or by mistake.
- Prevent unauthorised users, residents, visitors or guests from entering restricted areas where sensitive information, like customer data, might be stored.
- Eliminate the need for mechanical keys, lock replacements, and complicated system configurations.
- Choose from two primary access control solutions – cloud-based access control or on-premise access control – and different access methods.
Which are the most popular access control systems?
There is a wide range of access control systems available on the market today. One option is the use of contactless proximity smart cards or RFID cards, which are issued to authorised personnel to grant access to spaces fitted with a card reader. Card-based access control systems are a popular choice because they are easy to use; the cards can also be easily deactivated if lost or stolen. In addition, the best card access systems can provide a detailed audit trail of who has accessed specific areas and when.
Mobile-based access control is another widely-used possibility. These systems utilise smartphones and digital technology like Bluetooth LE and NFC. They are becoming increasingly popular due to the high level of security, flexibility, and user experience they offer.
Other common access control methods include PIN code keypad access, biometric access – such as facial recognition – and access via Apple Wallet using an iPhone and Apple Watch. Each of these methods boasts its own strengths and can be applied to different use cases but, ultimately, the choice of which method to implement will depend on the specific needs of the facility and organisation.
Choosing the best access control systems for businesses
Selecting the access control system best suited for your business depends on many factors, including use case, security needs, technology, integrations, installation size, and cost. The key is finding the right balance between your needs, project specifications, operational requirements, and functionality. Ultimately, the goal is to allow users to enter buildings when necessary while keeping unauthorised guests out of off-limits floors, zones, and spaces altogether – all while streamlining management to digitise your building operations.
Access control systems are an essential part of any business or building operations and security. They allow you to keep track of who is coming into your building, where they're going, and how long they have been inside. This can help ensure that unauthorised people cannot gain access to sensitive areas of your facility.
Take a look at the 10 features to consider when selecting an access control solution:
- Access methods and ID management. How do I manage access rights, methods, and permissions in a select access control system?
- Security requirements. What level of security do you need?
- Facility needs. What is the size and layout of your facility, the number of people who need access, and the type of assets you want to protect?
- User needs. What are the needs and preferences of the users and visitors who will be accessing the facility? Consider factors such as ease of use, access method, and operator needs.
- Integration. Does the access control system need to integrate with other security systems, such as video surveillance or alarms, or to extend access control to elevators?
- Scalability. Will the system need to accommodate future growth or changes in your facility?
- Compatibility. Does the system work with your existing doors and IT infrastructure? Retrofit installation requirement that prioritizes existing doors.
- Cost. What is your budget, including installation and ongoing maintenance costs?
- Maintenance and support. What level of maintenance and support does the brand provide? Do they offer a warranty or service agreement?
- Compliance. Does the access control system comply with General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) criteria, cybersecurity and environmental regulations, and all other relevant certifications and standards for your industry or location?
At SALTO Systems, our certified security partners can give you all the information you need to determine the ideal access control system for your needs. But, before making your decision, here are a few other tips to help you pick the best access control system:
- Don't rely on the cheapest option – it may cause more problems in the long run.
- Don't underestimate the importance of user training and support.
- Avoid access control systems that are not scalable or flexible enough to meet your future needs.
- Avoid access control systems that don’t adapt to your needs, existing infrastructure, and existing doors.
- Avoid access control solutions that don't comply with GDPR or cybersecurity requirements and environmental policies.
- Don’t choose an access control system that cannot adapt to different access points or doors, or those which require wiring and entail high hidden costs.
